Baseball Slugs Way to Win Over Binghamton

Senior Mike DeStefano had a team-high four hits as Canisius slugged its way to a 22-7 victory over Binghamton Tuesday afternoon in collegiate baseball action from the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins (7-11) collected a season-high 20 hits in the win, the most in a game since April 2, 2022 versus Quinnipiac.

Binghamton (10-10) was led by Kevin Gsell, who went 3-4 with 3 RBI for the Bearcats.

Sophomore Jackson Strong began his hot day at the plate with a two-run single in the bottom of the first to give Canisius the early advantage.

The Griffs added to their lead with a six-spot in the second frame, highlighted by Strong's three-run shot.

The sophomore drove in his sixth run of the contest in the third on an RBI groundout to the first baseman, scoring junior Max Grant for a 9-0 lead.

Leading 10-1 in the bottom of the fifth, graduate Kyle Kush hit the second home run of the day for Canisius, a solo shot to the deepest part of the park in center.

Following Binghamton's three-run top of the seventh to cut the Griffs' lead to 12-4, Canisius responded in the home half with a 10-run frame that sent 16 batters to the plate.

Junior Carlin Dick got the inning started in a big way, crushing a three-run homer off Bearcats reliever Andrew Fingleton.

Following DeStefano's RBI infield single to make it a 16-4 ballgame, Canisius worked five straight free passes that eventually led to a 20-4 contest.

Dick drove in his fourth run of the inning with a single to center before sophomore Trent Rumley followed suit with an RBI single of his own.

Binghamton looked to mount a comeback in the eighth when Christian Perez hit a two-run home run and Gsell connected on a two-out single to center, but were unable to get any more runners across.

Senior Chris Pouliot earned the start for Canisius, fanning a pair of batters in his lone inning of action.

Junior Levi Abbott picked up his first victory of the season, tossing four innings of relief, yielding just one run on a pair of hits while striking out five.
