Offensive Surge Helps Baseball to Conference-Opening Win

Canisius used an eight-run seventh inning to break the game open and eventually lead to a 15-1 victory over Mount St. Mary's Saturday afternoon in collegiate baseball action from the E.T. Straw Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Md.

The Golden Griffins (4-11, 1-0 MAAC) scored 15 runs on 14 hits, both of which were season highs while handing the Mountaineers (10-10, 0-1 MAAC) their first loss as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Junior Matt Duffy earned his first victory of the campaign, yielding one run on four hits in a season-high eight innings of work while striking out seven batters.

Senior Mike DeStefano gave Canisius the early lead in the first with a two-out opposite field double to plate third year Max Grant

Mount St. Mary's responded in the bottom half of the frame right away as Aiden Tierney singled in Tristan McAlister for the third straight batter to reach base in the inning.

Duffy would settle down and silence the Mount bats the rest of the way, allowing just two hits and one walk across the remainder of his outing.

Redshirt sophomore JT Ennen gave the Griffs a 2-1 advantage in the second when he plated junior Carlin Dick.

The game would remain a pitcher's duel until the seventh inning when the Blue and Gold's bats exploded.

Canisius sent 12 batters to the dish en route to the eight-run frame in which the Griffs worked five walks and added back-to-back singles later in the inning.

Leading 6-1 with the bases loaded, graduate Kyle Kush served a ball into right, plating a pair before Ennen singled home Dick to give the Griffs a 9-1 advantage.

Graduate Dylan Vincent capped off the offensive outburst with a sacrifice fly to center, giving Canisius double-digit runs for the second time this season.

Ennen ended his strong day at the plate with an RBI single in the ninth before coming around to score on Grant's two-run single to make it 13-1 Canisius.

The Griffs added the 14th and 15th runs of the afternoon on DeStefano's single and sophomore Jackson Strong's double to the left-center gap, respectively.

Redshirt sophomore Ethan Hennessy tossed a scoreless ninth, helping Canisius secure its conference-opening win.
