Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Kelly's Career Day Powers Men's Lacrosse Over Marist

Redshirt sophomore Colin Kelly notched a career-high seven goals, one shy of the program record, as Canisius came back to defeat Marist, 18-16, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

Along with Kelly's seven goals, junior attackman Keegan Kozack added in a hat trick and two assists for the Golden Griffins (2-6, 1-1 MAAC) while reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Kevin Carney and Patrick Mitchell each notched two tallies of their own. In net, sophomore Tommy Kunz made 15 saves, one shy of his season-high 16 he last set against Quinnipiac on March 11.

The Red Foxes (2-5, 1-1 MAAC) used a multitude of goal scorers as 10 different players recorded at least one tally. Matt Fermo picked up a game-high 12 ground balls while Kyle Stofko caused two turnovers. Noble Smith notched seven saves in 30 minutes of action during the first half, while Daniel O'Meara totaled four stops after entering the game at the start of the second half.

Trailing 5-1 with 2:13 left in the first quarter, the Griffs came alive to end the frame, scoring three unanswered goals to cut the deficit to 5-4. During the spurt, senior Paul Medrick stamped his first ever career goal off an assist from freshman Alexis Simard.

Canisius and Marist would go back-and-forth to start the second quarter, with Marist holding a 9-6 lead at the media timeout with 6:47 left in the half. Out of the break, Kelly took over, scoring two of the Griffs next three goals to tie the game at 9-all with 5:03 left.

A goal by Jake Deacy put the Red Foxes back on top momentarily, but the Blue and Gold kicked off another 3-0 run to end the stanza, with Kelly notching his sixth goal of the contest during the spurt, to take a 12-10 lead entering halftime.

Marist would open the second half with a 3-0 run to regain a 13-12 advantage, but two late goals from sophomore Patrick Mitchell and redshirt junior Mikey Howe allowed the Griffs to reclaim the lead, 14-13, with 2:35 to play. Hunter Embury nixed the earlier Howe goal with a tally of his own to tie the contest, 14-14, heading into the final frame.

After allowing the first goal of the final stanza, the Griffs found an answer once again as Kelly scored his seventh of the contest at the 13:40 mark to tie the game at 15-all, sparking a four-goal surge that gave Canisius a 18-15 advantage with just over five minutes to play.

The scored remained the same until the final seconds of regulation, when Jamison Embury scored to determine the two-goal final margin.
