Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Manhattan in MAAC Matinee

Manhattan used a pair of runs to open and close the game as it defeated Canisius, 14-9, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y.

The Jaspers (6-2, 3-0 MAAC) tallied first six goals of the game to jump out to an early lead before notching the final four tallies of the contest to put the game out of reach.

Kelly DuPree scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Manhattan attack. Kyle Gucwa (3g/1a) and Dan MacKinney (1g/3a) both registered four points while Quinn Bowler notched three points on a goal and two assists.

Liam McDonough was 14-of-24 at the face-off X for the home team while in goal, Joseph Persico finished with seven saves.

Sophomore Jaxon Fridge led the way offensively for the Golden Griffins (2-7, 1-2 MAAC), finishing the day with two goals and an assist. Freshman Kevin Carney tallied a goal and an assist while six players chipped in one goal apiece. Sophomore goalie Tommy Kunz registered 13 saves between the pipes for the Blue and Gold.

Holding a one-goal lead late in the third quarter, Christian Lyons netted his first goal of the season to give Manhattan an 11-9 advantage heading into the fourth.

The Jaspers used the momentum gained from Lyons' strike to take control of the game over the final 15 minutes. A pair of tallies from DuPree book-ended a man-up strike from Gucwa provided Manhattan some breathing room while the Jaspers defense limited Canisius to just two shots on goal and forced four turnovers as they pulled away from the Griffs to record the five-goal victory.

Earlier in the contest, Manhattan notched six unanswered goals over the opening 11:06 to race out to an early 6-0 lead. Canisius countered with tallies from junior Hunter Parucki and sophomore Patrick Mitchell before the close of the opening frame to make it a 6-2 contest at the end of the first.

The Griffs carried that momentum into the early stages of the second, notching three straight goals to cap their five-goal run and trim the Manhattan advantage to one with less than six minutes to play in the half. The teams traded goals later in the quarter to close out the first-half scoring and send the teams to the locker room with the Jaspers in front, 7-6.

Fridge brought Canisius level for the first time in the game with his second goal of the contest at the 12:53 mark of the third, only to see Manhattan answer back with a quick three-goal surge that spanned just 79 seconds and put the Jaspers ahead, 10-7.

Sophomore Kayden Easter and redshirt sophomore Colin Kelly kept the Griffs within striking distance, countering with a pair of goals to pull Canisius within onein the later stages of the third, 10-9, setting the stage for the Jaspers' game-clinching run.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Post Game Comments
"We dug ourselves an early hole, going down 6-0. It was great to see the effort to claw back into the game and just be down one at the half before coming out and tying it up right out of the gates in the third. But we had a couple of lapses and that allowed Manhattan to jump out on us and create a lead that we couldn't close the gap on. Unfortunately, early on today and then in the later stages of the game, we were unable to run our game plan and do the things that we worked on throughout the week and in the huddle during the game. We have to be better with our focus and execution if we're going to be successful.

"It's engagement. That's one of the key words we've been using within our group. Being engaged in what's going on in every facet of game. That didn't happen on the defensive end and off some of the faceoffs we had some turnovers that led to lapses on down the line. It's a shared piece of accountability that we have to be better at. Last week was a great week for us, but that was last week and we got to be able to bring it again in the next game we play.

"In the second and third quarters guys were dialed in and running the game plan in all areas and we were moving the ball and clicking as a group and things were going really well for us at that time. We got away from that in the fourth and that allowed us to be unhinged and that's what created the result that we ended up with today."
