Game Recap: Baseball |

Kent State Sweeps Baseball in Twinbill Friday

Kent State scored 17 runs in the final six innings of the first game to defeat Canisius, 17-3, before the Golden Flashes plated 20 runs between the third and fifth frames in the second contest of the day to secure the doubleheader sweep with a 21-4 win over the Golden Griffins Friday in collegiate baseball action from the Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium in Kent, Ohio.

Game One Recap
Canisius' offense came out of the gates by sending eight batters to the plate in the top of the first. Collectively, the Griffs worked three walks, two hits and a hit by pitch.

The Griffs opened the scoring when junior Max Grant came around to score from second on a failed pickoff attempt from Kent State starter Ben Cruikshank.

Canisius capitalized in the next two at bats when senior Mike DeStefano singled to right allowing redshirt sophomore Josh Niles, doubling the visitor's lead.

Sophomore Jackson Strong then capped off the inning with a single of his own, serving it into right, to plate DeStefano.

Unfortunately for the Griffs, the Golden Flashes' bats came alive, beginning in the home half of the second, when the team plated four runs to take the one-run lead.

Kent State then opened the contest up with a five-spot in the third before scoring a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

The Golden Flashes closed out the game with six runs in the bottom of the sixth, putting the team up by 13.
Canisius would score just one run after the first as Strong slugged his second long ball of the campaign, a solo shot in the fifth inning.

Game Two Recap
Just like the opening contest, the Griffs opened play with a three-run first inning.

Canisius used three straight singles from graduate Dylan Vincent, Grant and Niles to start the game with Niles plating Vincent with a one-bagger into left.

Moments later, Grant and Niles both pulled off a double steal while an errant throw from the catcher enabled Grant to trot home for the 2-0 lead.

Later in the inning, Niles scored the third run on DeStefano's RBI groundout to the shortstop.

Kent State took its first and only lead of the game in the third in a big way, scoring eight runs in 12 plate appearances.

The Golden Flashes tacked onto its lead in the fourth with a five-run frame before plating seven in the fifth.

Game Notes
• Strong went 3-7 in the doubleheader, while earning his second career multi-hit contest and first career multi-RBI game.
• The Griffs worked nine walks in game one, backed by Grant's three free passes.
• Backstop JT Ennen earned the first multi-hit game of his career in the second game. The redshirt sophomore has a hit in three of his four starts this season.
• The Griffs tied their season high with four stolen bases in the opening contest.
