Women's Basketball Defeated by Iona

The visiting Iona Gaels stretched their win streak to 11 straight with a 68-58 victory over Canisius in MAAC women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center. Iona improved to 17-5 overall and 12-1 in league play with the victory, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 6-15 overall and 3-9 in the MAAC with the loss.

Iona guard Juana Camilion scored a game-high 22 points in the win for Iona. She also grabbed eight rebounds to go with three steals, two assists and two blocked shots in the winning effort, while guard Kate Mager chipped in 17 points, highlighted by five makes from 3-point land. Thoranna Hodge-Carr posted 10 points and seven boards for the Gaels, who shot 46.8 percent from the field and 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from 3-point land.

Canisius graduate student Vannessa Garrelts led four Griffs in double-figures with her team-high 14 points. She also grabbed six rebounds and posted two steals. Junior Dani Haskell was good for 12 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Giana Hernandez-Boulden posted 10 points and a game-high four steals. Athina Lexa chipped in 10 points and grabbed six boards for the Blue and Gold in the losing effort, as the Griffs ended the day by shooting 34.4 percent from the field and 27.3 percent (6-for-22) from behind the 3-point arc.

In the opening quarter, Iona led by as many as six points late in the frame, but the Griffs were able to cut that lead in half to 24-21 after 10:00 of play thanks to a 3-pointer by Garrelts with less than five seconds left on the clock. The Gaels used a 9-3 run to start the second quarter to take a 33-24 lead with 5:03 left before halftime, but the Griffs answered with a run of their own, scoring the game's next six points to make the score 33-30 in favor of Iona. That would be as close as the Griffs would get for the rest of the opening half, however, as Iona scored the final four points of the opening 20:00 to take a 37-30 lead into the locker room at intermission.

Haskell scored the first five points of the second half with a 3-pointer and a fast break-layup to get the Blue and Gold within two points at 37-35, but Iona again answered with a 7-3 scoring spurt that made the score 44-38 in favor of the visitors with 6:42 left in the third quarter. Camilion scored five of the Gaels' seven points in that stretch, and later in the frame, a trey by Camilion with 1:25 left in the stanza allowed the Gaels' lead to balloon to 10 points at 49-39.

A 3-pointer from Mager to start the fourth quarter kick started a 9-0 run over the first 4:35 of the final frame to give the Gaels their largest lead at 58-40. Despite making just three field goals in the final quarter, Iona was able to seal the win by going 12-for-18 from the free-throw line in the game's closing 10 minutes.
