Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Third-Quarter Surge Sends Robert Morris Past Men’s Lacrosse

Robert Morris used a 6-1 run during the third quarter to break open a close contest and defeat Canisius, 13-8, in collegiate men's lacrosse action Sunday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Taggart Clark tallied five goals and added two assists for the Colonials (3-0). David Burr finished with three goals and an assist while Ben Starkey chipped in two goals.

Zach Seppi went 11-of-20 at the face-off X with seven ground balls while Nate Randall finished with 10 saves in goal for the visitors.

Redshirt sophomore Colin Kelly notched four goals for the Golden Griffins (0-4). Sophomore Jaxon Fridge dished out a pair of assists while four players – senior Kyle Brunsch, juniors Keegan Kozack and Hunter Parucki and sophomore Kayden Easter - all finished with a goal. Sophomore Tommy Kunz recorded 16 saves between the pipes for Canisius.

Holding a 6-4 lead at the start of the second half, Eric Swagerty and Starkey notched a pair of goals just 76 seconds into the third quarter to quickly double the Colonials advantage before Consecutive tallies by Burr and a strike from Clark stretched the RMU edge to 11-4 just past the midway point of the frame.

A man-up goal from Kozack temporarily stemmed the tide for Canisius, only to see Clark close out the scoring with his second of the quarter to make it a 12-5 contest heading into the fourth.

Kelly struck twice early in a 42-second span early in the final frame to pull the Griffs within five, only to see Connor Boss answer back for Robert Morris to make it a six-goal goal. Easter capped the scoring with his second of the campaign with 3:58 remaining, determining the final five-goal margin.

Earlier in the contest, RMU opened the game on a 4-0 run before Brunsch got Canisius on the board with a man-up marker midway through the second quarter to spark a three-goal spurt that was capped by a pair of tallies from Kelly to make it a 4-3 contest.

Will Johansen and Clark responded for the Colonials, while Parucki struck for Canisius with less than 10 seconds to play before halftime, giving RMU a 6-4 lead at the break and setting the stage for the Colonials' third-quarter surge.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Post Game Comments
"We had our best defensive performance to date in terms of running the game plan and we got some great solid saves from Tommy Kunz in net. The guys did a really good job on the defensive end today. Unfortunately, we turned the ball over too many times on the offensive end and it put the defense in a bad spot that led too many easy goals for them. Offensively, we have to improve, that the flat out and simple look at it.

"Just knowing that they can play high-quality defensive possessions against some really talented offensive players. It was a group effort, which was great to see and that's where we need to continue to just grow as a group on that end of the field.

"We're going to challenge some guys to be better. We're going to mix up some of our pairings in our midfield and our attack in practice and see what kind of chemistry we can build because we need to be better. That's as simple as it is. We're going to challenge the guys to do that here as we get back to practice this week."
