Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Strong First Quarter Not Enough as Men's Lacrosse Falls at Cleveland State

Cleveland State outscored Canisius by a 15-6 margin over the final three quarters to erase an early deficit and post an 18-12 victory in collegiate men's lacrosse action Saturday at Krenzler Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

The trio of Ryan High, Brendan Sigurdson and Gannon Matthews combined for 13 goals to pace a potent Vikings (1-2) attack as Haigh registered a team-high five goals while Sigurdson and Matthews added in four goals apiece. Matthews also dished out three assists to lead all players with seven points.

Junior Keegan Kozack recorded a hat trick for the Golden Griffins (0-5). Junior Hunter Parucki and redshirt sophomore Colin Kelly added a pair of tallies each while Parucki also registered an assist to finish with three points on the afternoon.

Canisius trailed 1-0 early in the first quarter before rattling off five unanswered goals, highlighted by a trio of tallies from Kozack, to grab a 5-1 advantage with just over four minutes to play in the opening frame.

Down 6-3 at the start of the second quarter, the Viking used goals from four different players, including a pair of tallies from Amiri Austin, to open the frame on a 5-0 run and pull back in front, 7-6. The teams traded goals over the remainder of the first half, giving CSU a 9-8 edge at the break.

The Vikings carried their momentum into the third quarter, scoring four of the five goals registered in the frame to stretch their lead to 13-9 heading into the fourth.

Goals from Kelly and Parucki to open the final frame countered a tally from the Vikings to trim the Griffs deficit to three, 14-11, with 8:45 remaining. That would be as close as Canisius would get, however, as CSU closed the game on a 4-1 spurt to determine the six-goal margin of victory.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Post Game Comments
"We had a great team effort at the start of the game, got some really good shots during that first quarter, but Cleveland State answered back to tie it and then we were unable to sustain any sort of momentum the rest of the way. We had a lot of small errors in certain facets of the game that gave them the ball and opportunities to add to their lead and they took advantage of them.

"The first quarter today proved that we can have a good start to games. A good start is something that we haven't had thus far this season, so it's important for our team to learn how to start a game off on the right foot. Now, learning how to sustain that effort and energy for four quarters is the next big step for this group."
