Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Ends Weekend with a Win Over George Mason

An RBI-single off the bat of junior Carlin Dick and 2.1 innings of scoreless relief from sophomore Peyton Consigli proved to be the difference, as the Canisius Golden Griffins closed out their trip to the Swig and Swine Classic with a 6-4 win over George Mason Sunday afternoon at Shipyard Park in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

In the day's first game, three Ball State pitchers combined to record 21 strikeouts as the Cardinals defeated the Griffs 6-1. Canisius closes out the first weekend of the 2023 campaign with a 2-2 record.

Game One Recap
Canisius jumped out to an early 1-0 lead into the top-half of the first after senior Mike DeStefano drove home teammate Max Grant with an RBI-double to the gap in right centerfield. The Griffs would hold the 1-0 lead until the home-half of the fifth, as Ball State scored twice to take a 2-1 lead. The Cardinals added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Zach Lane, and then Ball State tacked on two more runs in the seventh to take a 5-1 lead on the Blue and Gold.

Ball State reliever Ryan Brown picked up his third win of the season on the hill after he tossed 4.1 innings of scoreless relief and fanned 12 Canisius batters. Logan Schulfer had seven strikeouts for Ball State in 3.2 innings of work, while starter Casey Bargo allowed a run on two hits to go with two strikeouts in 1.0 inning of action.

Canisius starter Justin Guiliano took the loss on the hill for the Blue and Gold after he allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits while fanning five. Graduate student Brett Kochanski threw 3.0 innings of relief and struck out four, while allowing three runs on four hits.

Game Two Recap
With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Dick's base hit back up-the-middle plated teammate Dylan Vincent to give Canisius the lead for good, as the Blue and Gold scored a 6-4 victory over George Mason in non-conference action.

The Griffs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of sophomore Cole Sebastian, who finished the day by going 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Mason scored a run in the third, two more times in the fifth and then knotted the game at 4-4 in the top-half of the seventh after Mark Trotta singled to center to drive in teammate James Quinn. At that point, the Griffs brought Consigli in from the bullpen, and the 2022 MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year locked down the Patriots' bats, as he held George Mason to just two hits while striking out two in 2.1 innings of relief to score his first victory of the season on the mound.

Canisius added an insurance run in the eighth on an infield single by graduate student Kyle Kush that allowed DeStefano to score from third. Consigli retired the Patriots in order in the ninth to seal the victory for the Blue and Gold.

Canisius had eight hits in the win over George Mason, with DeStefano, Grant and senior Kenny Dodson all recording doubles on the day. DeStefano also stole a base for the Blue and Gold, as the team posted its second-straight 2-2 start to the season through four games.

Game Notes
• Canisius played Ball State for the first time in program history. The game against George Mason was the 11th meeting between the two programs, and the first since 2017.
• The three-run homer by Sebastian marks his career extra-base hit, and it also serves as his first multi-RBI game.
• With a double in both games on Sunday, DeStefano now has a two-base hit in three-straight contests.
• Dating back to last season, Consigli has earned a win in each of his last five outings.
