Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Opens Season With Split

The Canisius baseball team began the 2023 season with a win and loss on Saturday, opening the season with a 3-0 setback to Boston College before defeating Merrimack, 11-4, in collegiate baseball action from the Swig and Swine Classic in Charleston, S.C.

Game 1 Recap

The Golden Griffins first game was a pitcher's duel early on, with junior Matt Duffy and Boston College's Chris Flynn combining for 14 strikeouts over the first four innings of play before the Eagles broke the scoreless deadlock in the sixth with a pair of runs.

Cameron Leary led off the frame with a solo home run to center before Nick Wang and Barry Walsh reached via a free pass and single, respectively.

Wang would plate the Eagles' second run of the contest on a double-play.

Up a pair, Boston College added an insurance marker in the seventh thanks to a Joe Vetrano solo shot.

Duffy struck out seven batters in no-decision, yielding just three hits in 4.1 innings. Senior Tom Peltier gave up all three Boston College runs, tossing 4.2
innings of relief.

Game 2 Recap

Redshirt sophomore Josh Niles and senior Ryan Weiss sparked the Canisius offense against Merrimack, as the corner infielders accounted for seven of 11 RBI for the Griffs.

Down 1-0 entering the bottom of the third, Weiss, a transfer from Oswego State, homered in his first Division I at-bat to right field to tie the game at 1-all.

Senior Mike DeStefano hit a double later in the inning scoring graduate Kyle Kush and junior Max Grant to take the 3-1 lead.

DeStefano singled with no outs and the bases loaded in the fifth, earning his third RBI. Niles came up next and hit a 2-RBI double down the left-field line to make it a 6-2.

Weiss ignited a 5-run sixth inning with his second solo shot before Kush scored on a fielder's choice hit by Grant, increasing the Canisius lead to 8-2. Niles blasted a three-run opposite-field home run later in the frame, setting a career-high with 5 RBI.

Sophomore Aaron Duffy earned the victory in 5 innings of work, allowing two earned runs on five hits.

Coming in for relief for their first collegiate appearances were junior Bryan Aduddle and freshman Sam Staerker. The duo pitched two innings each, allowing one run a piece.
