Women's Lacrosse Sweeps MAAC Weekly Awards

The Canisius women's lacrosse team pulled off a royal flush, winning all three TicketSmarter MAAC Women's Lacrosse Weekly Awards, the league office announced Monday.

Freshman goalie Jody Chu earned the circuit's Defensive and Rookie of the week honors while senior midfielder Paige Stachura earned Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career.

Chu is the first Golden Griffins player to earn back-to-back awards since Erica Evans won Offensive Player of the Week for consecutive weeks on April 3 and 10, 2017.

Chu continued to dominate in net, posting 21 total saves while picking up seven ground balls in the pair of contests during the week. Against St. Bonaventure on Feb. 15, the South Riding, Va., native had eight saves and a ground ball in the Griffs' 13-9 victory. Her best game of the week came on Feb. 19 against Stetson, as she set a new season-high in saves with 13 and ground balls with six. Chu currently ranks 11th in the nation for save percentage at .564.

Meanwhile, Stachura tallied 10 points, scoring eight goals and notching two assists in the two games. The Orillia, Ontario, native also won nine draw controls and picked up three ground balls. Stachura scored four goals and picked up one assist against both the Bonnies and Hatters. In addition to her offensive performance at St. Bonaventure, she added in five draw control wins, three ground balls and two free position goals.

The Blue and Gold are back in action next week on Feb. 28 as they head to the Quaker State to take on Pitt. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
