Hawthorne Shines as Hockey Blanks Mercyhurst to Complete Sweep

Senior goaltender John Hawthorne stopped all 34 shots he faced to record his second career shutout as Canisius defeated Mercyhurst, 2-0, in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.

Senior Keaton Mastrodonato scored a power-play goal in the first period and graduate student Erik Urbank notched an even-strength marker in the second for the Golden Griffins (11-14-3, 9-8-3 AHA), who completed the sweep of the weekend series with the victory.

Tyler Harmon made 32 stops between the pipes for the Lakers (8-19-3, 7-12-3 AHA).

For the second straight contest, Canisius opened the scoring with a power-play goal late in the first period. Mastrodonato collected a pass from fellow senior David Melaragni at the Mercyhurst blueline and drove to the net before putting the puck past the blocker of Harmon at the 16:34 mark for his ninth goal of the season.

Urbank doubled the Griffs advantage just over two minutes into the second period, firing a wrist shot under the pads of Harmon from the left faceoff circle for his second goal of the campaign.

That would be all the support Hawthorne would need as he stopped all 12 shots he faced from the Lakers in the third period to close out the contest and complete the weekend sweep.
