Barczewski Makes Career-High 52 Saves in Hockey's 2-1 Setback at Air Force

Senior goaltender Jacob Barczewski made a career-high 52 saves, but it was not enough as Air Force recorded a 2-1 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Association action Monday at the Cadet Ice Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Barczewski kept the Golden Griffins (11-15-3, 9-9-3 AHA) within striking distance as the Falcons (12-17-2, 8-12-1 AHA) held a commanding 54-23 advantage in shots on goal.

Willie Reim and Clayton Cosentino accounted for the two goals for Air Force while senior Ryan Miotto tallied the lone goal for Canisius. Austin Park made 22 saves between the pipes for the Falcons.

Reim opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 7:22 mark of the first period, sliding the puck between the legs of Barczewski from the top of the crease to put the Falcons in front early.

Miotto answered back for Canisius a little more than three minutes later, depositing his own rebound past Park after his initial attempt was turned aside to tie the game at 1-all.

Cosentino restored the Air Force advantage with just over a minute to play in the second period, deflecting Luke Rowe's point shot past Barczewski from the middle of the slot to give the Falcons a 2-1 edge heading into the third.

The third period saw Canisius put a game-high 10 shots on goal, but they were unable to solve Park as the Falcons held on for the one-goal victory.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Post Game Comments
"(Jacob) Barczewski was unbelievable tonight. He gave us a chance to win. Obviously, Air Force outplayed us tonight and the result is all over the lineup. The fact of the matter is our goalie gave us a chance to remain in a game. We'll be better tomorrow.

"We knew the way they were going to play. They're simple and hard and we weren't simple or hard enough tonight. It starts in lots of areas: breaking the puck out better, advancing the puck north, being more committed to getting pucks in deep. We didn't get enough pucks around a goalie it hasn't played very much in college hockey. That's just not good enough. You're not going to win the game playing that way. We will remedy those things and go back to battle tomorrow.

"That's the best I've ever seen a goalie play in my time as a head coach. Barczewski battled for 60 minutes tonight. He made save after save. He made tough ones, easy ones. He was very solid. That was maybe the best performance I've seen by a goaltender a long, long time."

Game Notes
• Monday's game served as the 56th all-time meeting between Canisius and Air Force. The Falcons improved to 28-17-11 against the Griffs with Monday's triumph.
• Air Force was 1-for-5 with the power play while Canisius was 0-for-4 with the man advantage. • The Griffs allowed just their second power-play goal against in their last 34 shorthanded opportunities with Reim's power-play tally in the first period. Both power-play goals against came during that stretch have come during five-minute majors.
• Canisius played in its fifth straight game decided by a single goal and moved to 3-2 in those contests.
• The Griffs allowed two goals or fewer for the 14th time this season and moved to 8-3-3 when doing so with Monday's setback.
• Barczewski's 52-save performance surpassed his previous personal best of 43 saves, set at Holy Cross on Jan. 15, 2022.
• Barczewski is the first Canisius goaltender to record more than 50 saves in a game since Daniel Urbani made a program-record matching 61 stops at Penn State on Oct. 28, 2016.
• Barczewski's 52 saves on Monday represents the third most by a goaltender in an Atlantic Hockey Association contest in league history and the most since the 2010-11 season.
• Miotto's first-period goal was his team-leading 10th tally of the campaign.
• Senior Keaton Mastrodonato picked up his 14th assist of the season on Miotto's first-period tally, moving him into a tie for the team lead in that category.
