McDermott’s Last-Second Goal Lifts Hockey Past Mercyhurst

Sophomore forward Alton McDermott scored with 7.5 seconds remaining in regulation to break a 3-3 tie and lift Canisius to a 4-3 victory over Mercyhurst in Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.

Seniors Hudson Lambert and Keaton Mastrodonato and freshman Oliver Tarr also scored for the Golden Griffins (10-14-3, 8-8-3 AHA). Senior goaltender Jacob Barczewski made 26 saves in goal for the Blue and Gold to earn his ninth win of the season.

Dustin Geregach scored twice and Eric Esposito notched a goal and two assists for the Lakers (8-18-3, 7-11-3 AHA). Tyler Harmon made 17 stops between the pipes for Mercyhurst.

Tied in the final seconds of regulation, Canisius created a turnover in the neutral zone that senior Markus Boguslavsky collected at the Mercyhurst blueline and played to a streaking McDermott on the right side, where he collected the pass and took a couple of strides before firing the puck towards the goal. McDermott's initial attempt went wide of the cage, but bounced off the end wall and back out in front, here he collected the rebound and fired the puck that squeaked past Harmon to give the Griffs the one-goal victory.

The last-second goal by McDermott capped a wild third period that saw the Lakers score three times in the opening 11:32 of the frame to erase a three-goal deficit.

Esposito got Mercyhurst on the board less than minute into the third, depositing Steven Agriogianis' goalmouth feed to make it a 3-1 contest.

Geregach pulled the Lakers level with a pair of tallies a little more than three minutes apart midway through the period. His first goal came at the 8:15 mark of the third when his shot from the right point found its way through traffic and past the glove of Barczewski to make it a 3-2 contest.

Geregach struck again to tie the game at 11:32 of the third, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush by flipping the puck over an outstretched Barczewski to knot the score at 3-3, setting the stage for McDermott's late-game heroics.

Earlier in the contest, Tarr opened the scoring at the 15:55 mark of the first period with a power-play goal, jamming home a loose puck from just off the left post for his first collegiate tally.

Lambert doubled the Griffs advantage to 2-0 less than two minutes after Tarr's opening salvo, firing a wrist shot from the right point that dipped on its way to the cage before finding its way between the legs of Harmon for his first of the campaign.

Mastrodonato stretched Canisius' advantage to 3-0 at the 6:08 mark of the second, deflecting junior Cody Schiavon's point shot between the legs of Harmon for his eighth goal of the season.
