Volleyball Sweeps Saint Peter's on Senior Day

The Canisius volleyball team closed out the home portion of its 2023 schedule with 3-0 sweep of Saint Peter's in MAAC action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center. With the win, the Golden Griffins improved to 9-15 overall and 7-9 in league action, while the Peacocks fell to 0-28 overall and 0-16 in conference play.
 
Graduate student Ella Loussia led the Blue and Gold with 15 kills and three service aces, while sophomore Ella Bourque notched 32 assists in the win. Sophomore Alyssa Rich totaled a team-high 14 digs for the Blue and Gold, while sophomore Bella Mosquera and junior Kara Zaucha each recorded a pair of block assists. As a team, Canisius hit .302 for the match while holding Saint Peter's to a .122 team hitting percentage for the contest.
 
Mackenzie Tucker led the Peacocks with six kills and Lily Konrad added in 13 assists in the losing effort. Mackenzie Tucker was credited with a match-high 15 digs in the contest for Saint Peter's which has now lost 36-straight matches, dating back to last season.
 
Tied 16-16 midway through the first set, the Griffs took over thanks to a 9-0 run en route to the 25-16 set victory. In that scoring spurt, Loussia put down a pair of kills and added a pair of service aces.
 
In the second set, Canisius trailed 11-9 before using a 6-0 run to make the score 15-11 in favor of the Griffs. In that run, which was started by a kill from Bourque, freshman Lauren Hubert had a pair of kills for the Blue and Gold. She ended the day with 10 kills, her third-straight contest with double-digits in the kills column. Saint Peter's battled back in the second set and trimmed Canisius' cushion to 18-16, but the Griffs pulled away by scoring seven of the set's final eight points to earn the 25-17 set victory. In that decisive run, Loussia had three kills for the Griffs, while Zaucha added a kill and a service ace for the home team.
 
Canisius sealed the 3-0 sweep of Saint Peter's by taking the third set by a score of 25-14. The Peacocks scored the first three points of the frame out of the intermission, but again, Canisius answered, as the team hit .346 for the set en route to the team's fourth 3-0 victory in MAAC play this season.

MATCH NOTES:
• Sunday was the 55th all-time meeting between these two long-time rivals. The Griffs lead the all-time series 40-15.
• Canisius swept Saint Peter's in both meetings this season. The Griffs have now taken four straight in this series, dating back to 2021.
• One day after setting a program record for aces in a five-set match, Canisius was credited with 12 service aces on Sunday. Loussia, Zaucha and Bourque each had three aces apiece in the match.
• Mosquera is seven block assists shy of passing former Griffs Jacklyn Malusa (2014) and Leah Simmons (2019) to enter the top-10 for block assists in a single season.
• Bourque's 32 assists gives her 30-or more assists in a match 14 times this season. Her effort on Sunday gives her 10.0 assists per set this season, which ranks third in the MAAC.
• Prior to the start of the match, Canisius honored Loussia and Taylor Baldwin during its Senior Day ceremony.

 
UP NEXT:
Canisius will head on the road to close out the 2023 regular season, starting next Saturday (Nov. 11) when the team plays at Iona. That match will start at 1 p.m., and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
