Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker at Iona

Iona rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Canisius, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action at the Hynes Athletic Center in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Pacing the Gaels (14-14, 10-7 MAAC) was Ava DeGuzman, who totaled a double-double with 12 kills and 22 digs while Jen Soto and Mackenzie Wiggins chipped in 13 kills apiece. Emma Vu chipped in 29 assists for the home side. Reigning MAAC Libero of the Year Hope Matschner notched a match-best 32 digs for the victors.

Junior Kara Zaucha led the Golden Griffin (9-16, 7-10 MAAC) offense with 15 kills and 18 digs for her own double-double while freshman Lauren Hubert and graduate student Ella Loussia notched 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Sophomore Ella Bourque added 41 assists in the losing effort. On the defensive side of the ball, junior Jillian Hanna totaled 30 digs and a match-best five service aces while sophomore Alyssa Rich notched 20 digs of her own.

Tied 2-2 in the match, the Griffs and Gaels traded points to begin the final frame until a kill by sophomore Bella Mosquera ignited a 6-0 run to give Canisius a 10-5 advantage.

Iona responded with a 7-2 spurt of their own, led by a pair of kills from Soto, to tie the match, 12-12. After another back-and-forth between the two sides, the Griffs would be within one point of winning the match, 14-13, after Zaucha's 15th kill of the match. The Gaels would survive though, capitalizing off a Canisius service error to tie the match before sealing their comeback victory with a pair of DeGuzman kills to win the fifth set, 16-14, and the match.

Earlier in the contest, the Griff would race out to an early 19-13 lead in the opening frame before a late 6-2 Iona rally would bring the Gaels within two, 21-19. Canisius and Iona exchanged the final four scores, with the Blue and Gold sealing the victory with Zaucha's four kill of the frame to win 25-23 and take a 1-0 lead.

Canisius would nearly hit at a .300 clip in the second frame as it compiled a .297 hitting percentage, compared to just .053 from Iona, to win the frame in a convincing fashion, 25-15.

The Gaels would battle back, holding to Canisius to a sub .100 hitting percentage across the next two sets to tie the match, 2-2, and set the stage for the decisive fifth set.
