Volleyball Wraps Up Season with Win at Manhattan

The Canisius volleyball team ended its season on a high note, sweeping Manhattan, 3-0, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Griffins finished the year with a 10-16 overall record and 8-10 conference ledger. Manhattan capped the year at 9-22 and 6-12 during conference action.

Pacing Canisius was graduate student Ella Loussia, who recorded 11 kills with sophomore Ella Bourque totaling 20 helpers for the Blue and Gold. On the defensive side of the ball, junior Jillian Hanna had a team-best 14 digs while sophomore Bella Mosquera notched four total blocks at the net. As a team, the Griffs hit at a clip of .333 (33-8-75).

Mikalah Curran and Chloe Andrerson paced Manhattan with four kills apiece while Dominique Velarde led the Jaspers with 10 digs. As a team, Manhattan was held to an overall negative hitting percentage of (-.024) (20-22-85).

The Griffs would make a statement in the opening frame, using a season-best .632 (12-0-19) hitting percentage to cruise past the Jaspers, 25-10, and take a 1-0 lead. Loussia paced the Griffs with four kills during the opening frame.

Canisius continued its offensive prowess in the second set, using an opening 7-1 spurt to set the tempo before a 12-3 run later in the frame would seal a 25-11 victory for the Griffs and propel the visitors to a 2-0 lead.

Ahead 19-9 in the third stanza, the Jaspers would attempt a late comeback, using an 8-4 stretch to cut into the Griffs lead and make it 23-16. Canisius would stymie the comeback on the very next point off freshman Lauren Hubert's seventh kill of the match before sealing the 3-0 win off a Manhattan attack error.
