Volleyball Uses Offense to Smother Siena

Kara Zaucha and Bella Mosquera both hit above .300 while the Canisius volleyball team hit better than .250 in every set to sweep Siena, 3-0, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the UHY Center in Loudonville, N.Y.
 
The Golden Griffins (7-14, 5-8 MAAC) were led by 12 kills from graduate student outside hitter Ella Loussia while Mosquera compiled a career-best .643 hitting percentage from nine kills and 14 attack attempts to pace the Blue and Gold. Junior outside hitter Kara Zaucha would also hit above .300 in the win, ending the day at a respectable .389 (9-2-18). Sophomore setter Ella Boruque notched 35 assists while junior libero Jillian Hanna added in 11 digs. As a team, the Griffs hit at a clip of .363 (46-10-98).
 
Sara Wagner led the Saints (2-22, 2-12 MAAC) with 16 kills with Claire Isaksen adding in 14 kills of her own. Peyton Hikle led all players with 12 digs. As a team, the Saints were limited to a hitting percentage of .114 (29-17-105).
 
Tied 22-all late in the opening frame, the Blue and Gold would break the tie with a kill from freshman middle blocker Kalia Reisma, igniting a 3-0 run that clinched the first set, 25-22, and gave the Griffs a 1-0 match lead.
 
Canisius offense did not slow down in the middle frame, posting a blistering .565 (14-1-23) hitting percentage compared to .036 (7-6-28) from Siena to win the frame, 25-12. Loussia picked up five of her 12 kills during the frame, with Mosquera adding in four of her own to pace the Griffs attack.
 
Tied 6-all early in the third set, Canisius would take over, using a Mosquera service ace to ignite an 11-4 run that would let them take a commanding 16-10 lead. The Saints would try and comeback, putting together a short 3-0 spurt, but Canisius would quell the push with a 9-1 stretch of their own, capped by a service ace from Loussia, the take the frame, 25-14, and sweep the match.

MATCH NOTES

• Saturday's match marked the first time Canisius swept the regular season series against Siena since the 2021 season.
• This is the sixth time in the last seven matches that Canisius won the first set.
• Today marked the first time Canisius swept an opponent after getting swept since last season when the Griffs were swept by Iona (Oct. 6), but defeated Manhattan (Oct. 12) 3-0 in their very next match
• The Griffs' .367 team hitting percentage is their second highest hitting percentage this year, only behind their Oct. 7 match against Saint Peter's where they hit at a clip of .393 (45-10-89)
• Saturday's match marked the 11th time this season Bourque produced 30-or-more assists in a match.
• Canisius only totaled seven total blocks compared to 15 for Siena, marking the fourth time this season and sixth time under head coach Tom Hanna that Canisius has won a match while recording less blocks.

Canisius travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Sunday to face Marist. Opening serve is set for 1 p.m., with the game airing live on ESPN+.
