Volleyball Downs Marist on the Road

The Canisius volleyball team collected a season-high 15 service aces en route to a 3-1 victory over Marist in MAAC volleyball action Sunday afternoon at James J. McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

With the win, the Golden Griffins' fourth in their last six outings, improved the Blue and Gold to 8-14 overall and 6-8 in league play. Marist fell to 12-14 overall and 10-5 in conference action with its fourth loss in its last five contests.

Junior Kara Zaucha and freshman Lauren Hubert led Canisius with 19 and 17 kills, respectively. Ella Loussia and Jillian Hanna each had five service aces in the victory, while Hanna also recorded a team-high 11 digs for the Griffs. Loussia added 10 kills to the Griffs' cause as well, giving her a double-double in the victory, while sophomore Ella Bourque fueled the Canisius offense with 46 assists.

For Marist, Sasha van der Merwe paced the Red Foxes with 19 kills and 14 digs with her teammate, Jordan Newblatt, added 11 kills and 14 digs in the losing effort. Claire Lewis supplied a match-high 47 assists for the home team, as Marist hit .289 as a team for the match.

With their backs against the wall in the opening set, the Griffs scored five-straight points to earn the 26-24 win and take a 1-0 lead in the match. In that scoring run, which was started by a kill from Hubert, Canisius got a service ace from Bourque to make the score 24-24. Hubert's final kill of the opening frame make the score 25-24 in favor of the Blue and Gold and then Canisius closed out the first set as winners after Marist was charged with an attack error.

The Red Foxes responded and evened the match at 1-1, after Marist hit .321 as a team to score the 25-16 set victory. In the third set with the score tied 21-21, Canisius used a late 3-0 run to take a 24-21 lead. Marist answered and cut the Griffs' lead to 24-23, but Hubert's 14th kill of the contest sealed the frame at 25-23 as Canisius took a 2-1 lead in the match.

Down by as much as four points in the final frame, the Griffs surged with a late 8-4 run, capped by a Marist attack error, to tie the match, 20-20. Even after van der Merwe gave Marist a 21-20 edge with a kill, the Griffs' offense would not slow down, closing the match on a 5-2 run, capped by Loussia's 10th kill of the contest, to win the set, 25-23, and the match by the score of 3-1.
