Volleyball Falls to Quinnipiac in Dig Pink Match

Quinnipiac's Yagmur Gunes totaled a match-high 18 kills to help lead the visiting Bobcats to a 3-0 victory over Canisius in a MAAC volleyball match at the Koessler Athletic Center Sunday afternoon. The win improved Quinnipiac to 14-7 overall and 10-2 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 6-14 overall and 4-8 in league action with the defeat.
 
Canisius freshman Lauren Hubert led the way on offense for the Blue and Gold with her team-high nine kills, while sophomore setter Ella Bourque added 26 assists. Junior Kara Zaucha was good for eight kills, nine digs, four block assists and a solo block on the day, while freshman Bella Mosquera chipped in seven kills and six block assists. Junior Jillian Hanna was credited with a team-high 14 digs on the day from her libero position.

GAME RECAP
Quinnipiac took the first set by a score of 25-20 after the Bobcats hit .316 in the opening frame as a team. Gunes and teammate Ginerva Giovagnianoni combined to put down 13 of Quinnipiac's 17 kills in the first set. In the second set, a kill by Bourque put Canisius ahead 20-18. However, the Bobcats battled back and used a 7-2 run down the stretch to score the 25-22 set victory and take a 2-0 lead in the match. In the final scoring spurt, Gunes recorded three of her eight kills in the frame to lead Quinnipiac to the set victory.

Canisius trailed Quinnipiac by three at 12-9 midway through the third set before the Bobcats used a 4-1 run with a pair of kills by Giovagnianoni to take a 16-10 lead. Later in th stanza, a kill by freshman Kalia Reisma trimmed the Bobcat lead to four points at 21-17, but the visitors closed out the contest by scoring the final four points of the day.

 
MATCH NOTES:

• Sunday marked the 28th all-time meeting between the two programs in a series that dates back to 2003. Canisius leads the series with Quinnipiac by a 17-11 count.
• Sunday was also Canisius' annual "Dig Pink" match to support the Side-Out Foundation and breast cancer awareness. The crowd of 806 is the largest crowd to see a volleyball match in the Koessler Athletic Center this season.

• Mosquera notched five-or-more total blocks for the seventh time this season with her six total blocks on the day. Those six total blocks also matched her season-high.

Canisius will return to the road for the first time in two weeks when the Griffs travel to play at Siena on Saturday, Oct. 28. Game time in Loudonville, N.Y., is set for 1 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live through SienaSaints.com.
