Fairfield Battles Back to Beat Volleyball

Fairfield's Mikayla Haut put down a season-high 21 kills to go with 10 digs, while teammate Allie Elliott chipped in 15 kills and a career-high 20 digs to help lead the visiting Stags to a 3-1 win over Canisius in MAAC volleyball action Saturday afternoon in the Koessler Athletic Center.

The Stags won the match by set-scores of 20-25, 26-24, 28-26 and 25-13 to extend their winning streak to seven-straight matches. Fairfield is now 14-5 overall and 10-1 in league play. The Golden Griffins slipped to 6-13 overall and 4-7 in conference action with the four-set loss.

For Canisius, freshman Lauren Hubert was one of three Griffs to record double-digit kills in the loss, as she led the way offensively with a team-high 15. Graduate student Ella Loussia added 14 kills and 13 digs to the Blue and Gold's efforts, while junior Kara Zaucha posted 12 kills, 14 digs and three block assists.

GAME RECAP
The Griffs came out of the gates on fire, as the team hit .286 in the opening frame to score the 25-20 set victory to start the afternoon. In that opening set, Loussia and Zaucha combined for nine of the team's 16 kills, and junior libero Jillian Hanna recorded seven of her team-high 17 digs. By taking the first set, Canisius ended Fairfield's string of set victories at 10, as the Stags came into the day having not dropped a set in MAAC play dating back to the third set versus Quinnipiac on Oct. 6.

The Griffs controlled play for most of the second set, and the Blue and Gold led 23-19 late in that stanza after a Fairfield service error. However, the Stags battled back and tied the score at 23-23 thanks to a quick 4-0 scoring spurt. Hubert's lone kill in the second set put Canisius ahead 24-23, but the Stags ended up evening the match at 1-1 after they scored the frame's final three points, capped by a pair of kills by Janna Schlageter.

Out of the intermission, the Griffs led by four at 11-7 early on in the third set thanks to a kill by Hubert, but the Stags once again used another scoring run to even the match at 13-13. Later in that frame, the Blue and Gold led by three at 23-20 after a kill by freshman Bella Mosquera, but Fairfield would eventually tie the set at 23-23, with Haut accounting for two of the Stags' three kills in the scoring run. Mosquera put the Griffs back in the lead moments later with a service ace to make the score 26-25 in favor of the home team, but three-straight kills by Haut ended up putting Fairfield ahead 2-1 in the match after the Stags scored the 28-26 set victory.

In the fourth set, Fairfield hit .478 as a team and Elliott put down four kills, as the Stags scored the 25-13 victory to win the match. Fairfield setter Blakely Montgomery had eight assists on the 13 Fairfield kills in the final set, and the Stags closed out the match by posting five of their nine service aces on the day in that frame. Canisius setter Ella Bourque had eight assists as well in the final set. She ended the day with 47 assists, five digs and a service ace to her credit.
