Volleyball Stymies Siena with 3-1 Victory

Propelled by hitting percentages north of .300 in the first and third set, the Canisius volleyball team downed Siena, 3-1, Sunday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The Golden Griffins (6-12, 4-6 MAAC) were led by double-doubles from Kara Zaucha (10 kills, 18 digs) and Ella Loussia (17 kills, 14 digs). Freshman outside hitter Lauren Hubert joined Zaucha and Loussia in double figures as she added in 13 kills of her own in the win. At the net, Loussia led the Blue and Gold with four total blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Bella Mosquera nabbed three of her own. Sophomore setter Ella Bourque collected 47 assists in the victory. As a team, the Griffs nearly posted a hitting percentage of .300 for the match, finishing at .293 (57-18-133).

The Saints (2-18, 2-8 MAAC) were paced by Anny Montano with 14 kills while Oliwia Majtyka pitched 14 assists. Defensively, Kalya Jones collected three total blocks and Payton Hinke added 17 digs. As a team, the Saints hit at a clip of .119 (38-22-134).

The first set was all Canisius, with the Griffs winning the frame, 25-11, to take a 1-0 lead. The Blue and Gold would hit at a clip of .348 (11-3-23) while the Saints were held to a negative hitting percentage of -.154 (5-9-26).  The Griffs would also record four service aces in the set, with the fourth ace being the set-winning point.

The second saw Siena and Canisius caught in a back-and-forth tilt for a majority of the frame. With the score knotted at 22-all late in the frame, the Saints would break the deadlock off a Griffs service error before closing out the frame with a kill and attack error to win, 25-22, and tie the match, 1-all.

Tied 13-all in the third set, the Griffs would turn the tide on the Saints, igniting a 10-5 swing ignited by a kill from Zaucha to take a 23-18 lead.  The two sides would trade the final four scores, with Canisius clinching the set off a kill from Hubert to win, 25-20, and take a 2-1 lead.

With the Griffs ahead 15-12 in the fourth set, Loussia would move up the record book for the second straight day as she collected her 16th kill of the match to pass Renee Lettow (2007-2010) for eighth place on the program's career kills chart. Loussia's noteworthy kill would come during a 10-5 run for the Griffs that would seal a 25-17 set victory and 3-1 match victory.

MATCH NOTES

• Loussia is close to her next record as she only needs six more kills to pass Kara Fadel (1990-93), who concluded her career with 1,073 kills, for seventh place on the all-time list.
• The Griffs hit at a match-best .353 (16-4-34) clip in the third frame.
• This is the 14th time in her career and first instance since Oct. 8 at Rider that Bourque produced 40-or-more assists in a match.
• This is the fifth straight home victory over Siena for the Griffs since the 2020 season. The two MAAC rivals played each other twice in Buffalo during the 2020 season.
