Volleyball Drops Match Against Marist

After dropping the first set, the visiting Marist Red Foxes rebounded to win the next three sets en route to a 3-1 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.
 
Canisius junior Kara Zaucha led the offensive charge for the Golden Griffins (5-12, 3-6 MAAC) with 12 kills, while freshman Lauren Hubert was good for 11 kills. Defensively, junior libero Jillian Hanna notched 21 digs and a career-high four service aces. At the net, freshman Kalia Reisma finished the match with seven total blocks. Sophomore setter Ella Bourque was credited 31 kills for Canisius in the loss. As a team, the Griffs hit at a clip of .151 (49-24-166) for the contest.
 
MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Sasha van der Merwe led the way for Marist (11-10, 9-1 MAAC) with 26 kills and a career-high 21 digs, while Marist libero Kendall O'Brien posted a match-high 29 digs in the winning effort. At the net, Alyssa White recorded six blocks for the Red Foxes, who posted a team hitting percentage of .258 (60-18-163) for the match.
 
Tied 15-15 at the halfway point of the first set, Canisius would turn the tide on the Red Foxes, riding a 7-2 run kicked-off by a kill from sophomore Bella Mosquera to give the Griffs a 22-17 lead. The Red Foxes respond with a 6-1 run of their own to tie the score, 23-23. After trading the next two points, the Blue and Gold sealed the first set with a 3-1 spurt, punctuated by a kill from Bourque, to take the frame, 27-25.

The Red Foxes took control of the action over the next two sets, holding the Griffs to a .077 (11-8-39) and .098 (11-7-41) hitting percentage en route to a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
Down 15-12 midway through the fourth set, graduate student Ella Loussia recoded her 1,050th career kill to pass Shannon Zaranek (1994-97) for 10th place all-time on the school's career kills list. Loussia ended the day with seven kills and nine digs. With the score reading 15-13, Marist closed out the match on a 10-5 run to seal the 25-18 set victory and 3-1 match triumph.

MATCH NOTES:

• Saturday marked the 45th all-time meeting between the two programs in a series that dates back to 1993. Canisius leads the all-time series 24-21.
• This is the first instance since the 2018 season where Marist won the first regular-season meeting between the two MAAC rivals.
• Now at 1,051 career kills, Loussia needs 16 kills to pass Renee Lettow (2007-10) for ninth place all-time on the career kills leaderboard.
• Mosquera has now recorded 10-or more kills in each of the Griffs' last three contests.
• With her two total blocks today, Mosquera has recorded at least two-or-more blocks in the last seven matches.
•
Hanna led the Griffs in digs for the sixth time this season
• Bourque has produced 30-or-more assists eight time this season
