Women's Basketball Falls Short Against Niagara

Niagara outscored Canisius, 24-8, in the first quarter on its way to a 82-70 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Wednesday Night at the Gallagher Center in Lewiston, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins (6-13, 3-7 MAAC) were paced by junior guard Dani Haskell, who poured in 19 points. Fellow guard Cheyenne Stubbs added in 13 points of her own, nine of which came from deep. Sophomore guard Athina Lexa grabbed a team-best five rebounds. As a team, Canisius shot .421 (24-of-57) from the field.

Angel Parker led the Purple Eagles (9-9, 8-2 MAAC) with a game-high 21 points and five steals. Her sister, Aaliyah, notched 13 points and a game-high six boards. As a team, Niagara shot slight better than Canisius at .453 (29-of-64) during the contest.

Niagara raced out to an early lead off the opening tip-off, holding a 13-2 advantage at the first media timeout. Jade Utledge led the early Purple Eagles charge with five points while the Niagara defense limited the Griffs to just 1-of-8 shooting to start the game.

The Griffs would knock down a pair of 3-pointers out of the media timeout, with Vannessa Garrelts and Elia Paez each connecting from deep, but Niagara would outscore the Griffs, 11-6, the rest of the way to take a 24-8 advantage into the second frame.

Canisius opened the second quarter with a pair of quick buckets courtesy of Stubbs and a 3-pointer from senior Jane McCauley, to chip into the Niagara lead and make it 26-13 with 8:30 to play.

Niagara would respond to the short Canisius offensive spurt with a 12-3 run over the middle 3:13 of the quarter to build a 38-16 edge with 4:53 to play in the frame.

Canisius found a way to fight back as Haskell would spark the Griffs' largest run of the game, a 15-6 spurt that lasted until the :56 mark of the second quarter to cut the Griffs deficit to 13, 44-31.

Niagara used four makes from the charity stripe to end the half to nix a late Canisius basket by sophomore forward Rhay Porter to take a 48-33 edge into the second half.

In the third quarter, Canisius used back-to-back 3-pointers in the opening :43 seconds of the half, courtesy of Garrelts and Lexa, to cut their deficit to just single digits, 39-48.

Even with the early baskets, the Griffs would head into the final quarter down 68-48 after a late make from Niagara's Saige Glover capped a 14-3 run for the Purple Eagles to close out the frame.

The fourth quarter saw Canisius outscore the Purple Eagles, 22-14, with Haskell leading the way with 10 points off a pair of 3-pointers and two layups, to determine the 12-point margin.
