Women's Basketball Falls at Home to Manhattan

Manhattan's Dee Dee Davis posted a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds to help lead the visiting Jaspers to a 64-48 win over Canisius in MAAC women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The Golden Griffins (6-12, 3-6 MAAC) were paced by guards Dani Haskell and Athina Lexa, who each had 10 points. For Lexa, her 10-point effort served as a season-high. Giana Hernandez-Boulden chipped in seven points and four rebounds, while freshman Adrien LaMora grabbed a season-high seven rebounds in the losing cause, as the Blue and Gold ended the contest by shooting 33.9 percent (19-for-56) from the floor.

Along with Davis' double-double, the Jaspers (7-11, 4-5 MAAC) also found offense from Brazil Harvey-Carr, who had 13 points, and Jade Blagrove added 11 points and nine rebounds. Manhattan shot 33.3 percent (23-of-69) from the field but ended the game by out-rebounding the Griffs by a 52-30 count, with 24 of those boards coming off the offensive glass.

Canisius and Manhattan were caught in a close affair for the first 3:09 of the contest, with the Jaspers only ahead, 5-4, with 6:51 to play in the opening frame. The Blue and Gold found their first two baskets from a pair of freshman forwards with Brooklyn Thrash and Sisi Eleko.

Manhattan would take control for the remainder of the first quarter, outscoring the Griffs 15-8 the rest of the way, to take a 20-12 lead after the game's first 10:00. After the teams traded buckets to start the second quarter, the Jaspers used a 12-3 run during the middle 3:41 of the frame and take a commanding 34-17 lead. In that run, the Jaspers hit three 3-pointer, with two coming off the hand of Harvey-Carr, who ended the contest with three 3-points makes.

Trailing 53-37 midway through the fourth quarter, the Griffs found a spark of offense with 5:55 to play, using a 9-4 run over the next 3:31 to cut the Jaspers lead to 13 points at 57-44 with 2:41 to play. Down the stretch, Manhattan hit 5-of-6 tosses from the free-throw line, led by Davis, who made four of those, to seal the victory.

Postgame Comments From Head Coach Sahar Nusseibeh:

GAME NOTES:
  • This was the 70th all-time meeting between Canisius and Manhattan with the series dating back to the 1989-90 season.
  • For the second consecutive game against Manhattan, Canisius limited the Jaspers to 10-or less points in a quarter. Manhattan was held to just 10 points in the third quarter on Saturday and in the first meeting this season on Dec. 29, the Jaspers were held to nine points in the second quarter.
  • This is the first time since Jan. 24, 2022, against Marist where the Griffs failed to reach 50 points on the scoreboard in a MAAC game.
  • The Blue and Gold only attempted five free-throws during the contest. This is the first time since Feb. 5, 2022 against Fairfield that Canisius attempted five-or less free-throws during a contest. The Griffs finished Saturday's game by going 4-of-5 from the line, with Hernandez-Boulden going 3-for-4 and Lexa going 1-of-1.
