Hockey Defeats Army in Overtime to Cap Wild Affair

Graduate student Nick Bowman scored in the final minute of overtime to lift Canisius to a 5-4 victory over Army in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at Tate Rink in West Point, N.Y.

Bowman's overtime marker capped a wild affair that saw the Golden Griffins (6-12-2, 4-6-2 AHA) use second-period goals from juniors Randy Hernandez and Max Kouznetsov, graduate student Erik Urbank and sophomore Alton McDermott to build a 4-1 cushion, only to have the Black Knights (7-12-3, 6-7-1 AHA) storm back with three goals in the third period to force overtime.

Thomas Farrell started the Army comeback less than two minutes into the third as he wired a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Canisius goaltender Jacob Barczewski from the top of the point during a five-minute power play for the Black Knights to trim the deficit to 4-2.

The Black Knights pulled within one with 3:02 remaining in regulation when Michael Sacco chipped a shot over an outstretched Barczewski during a 4-on-2 break to pull Army within one.

Joey Baez completed the comeback and forced overtime with 1:04 remaining in regulation, collecting a loose puck below the dots and firing a wrist shot inside the right post to knot the game at 4-4.

In overtime, Bowman spoiled the Army comeback bid and sent the Griffs home victorious with 26 seconds remaining in the extra session, snapping a wrist shot past the glove of Army netminder Gavin Abric from the middle of the slot during a power-play opportunity for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Trailing 1-0 after Army's Ricky Lyle opened the scoring with this third goal of the weekend midway through the first period, Hernandez brought the Griffs level just 1:22 into the middle frame with a power-play goal, finishing off a zone entry with a wrist shot past the glove of Abric.  Canisius took a 2-1 lead a little more than four minutes later as Kouznetsov darted into the Black Knights zone before sliding a shot under the right pad of Abric for his fourth goal of the season. Urbank increased the Griffs advantage to 3-1 just before the midway point of the period, deflecting senior Hudson Lambert's point shot into the Army goal for his first tally in a Canisius uniform. McDermott closed out the second-period barrage with less than two minutes to play in the frame, playing a puck from below the goal line towards the Army goal that deflected off of Abric and into the net to make it a 4-1 contest, setting the stage for the Black Knights comeback in the third. Barczewski made a season-high 42 saves between the pipes for Canisius. Abric finished with 19 stops between the pipes for Army.
