Hockey Rebounds from Early Deficit to Beat Bentley

Canisius scored five unanswered goals to overcome an early deficit and defeat Bentley, 5-1, in Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at Bentley Arena in Waltham, Mass.

Four players - graduate student J.D. Pogue and seniors Daniel DiGrande, Lincoln Erne and Ryan Miotto - all finished with a goal and an assist for the Golden Griffins (7-12-2, 5-6-2 AHA). Sophomore Alton McDermott accounted for the fifth Canisius goal while senior goaltender Jacob Barczewski stopped 23 shots to record his sixth victory of the season.

Arlo Merritt tallied the lone goal for the Falcons (7-16-0, 4-11-0 AHA). Nicholas Grabko finished with 22 saves between the pipes for the home team.

Bentley took a 1-0 lead just 1:41 seconds into the contest when Merritt deposited a rebound into the Canisius goal moments after Nicholas Niemo rang a wrist shot off the left post.

Pogue brought the Griffs level at the 13:11 mark of the opening frame, collecting a pass from fellow graduate student Erik Urbank deep in the Falcons zone before shoveling a backhanded effort past the right pad of Grabko to knot the score at 1-1.
Erne put Canisius in front with less than three minutes to play in the first period, zipping a wrist shot by the blocker of Grabko from the right face-off circle for his first collegiate tally to make it a 2-1 contest. McDermott stretched the Canisius advantage to 3-1 just before the midway point of the second period, depositing a feed from Pogue past the glove of Grabko during a rush opportunity for his fourth goal of the season. Miotto made it a three-goal game with a power-play goal at the 5:48 mark of the third, putting home DiGrande's feed from just off the left post to expand the Canisius cushion to 4-1. DiGrande closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal with 2:14 to play in the third to determine the four-goal margin of victory.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Post Game Comments
"That was a quality win for us tonight against a quality opponent. Bentley was much better than us over the first 12 minutes of the game. It took us that long to get going and once did, we solidified how we wanted to play. We were much more together; we were ready to win battles; we started to make some plays in the offensive zone and during line rushes. We did a really nice job of that. I think back to the Army game where we let a lead slip away. We did a much better job of learning from that and we spent a lot of time this week working on understanding how to quietly put an opponent away. That was a good job by us in those areas today.

"The expectation is we have guys on all four forward lines that are really good hockey players who have good skill and effort. I'm hoping, as we head into the later stages of the season, that things are finally starting to come together for us. That can be a pretty scary thing for the opponent because, when you look at our lineup up front, it's as deep as I can remember. We just happen to be putting some things together. When Lincoln Erne scored his first career goal to give us the lead, that gave us a pretty good boost. We got a big goal from Ryan Miotto on the power play. Alton McDermott scored a really nice goal and J.D. Pogue was excellent tonight. He led our lead our team with effort. He gets a goal and an assist and made a couple of huge blocks. The expectation is that our depth needs to play like we're capable of and tonight was a glimpse of that."
