Volleyball Defeated by William & Mary Saturday

William & Mary held off late rallies from Canisius in the second and third sets to earn the win in the second day of the 
Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Tribe took the match by the scores of 25-23, 25-19, 25-21.

With the victory, William & Mary evens its record to 3-3 on the campaign while the Golden Griffins slip to 2-4.

The Tribe jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the first set, but attack errors would allow the Griffs to use a 5-0 run to take the 8-7 lead. Each team would continue to exchange points for the rest of the set before the William & Mary would pull away to take the first set, 25-23.
 
William & Mary controlled the second set from the opening serve, going up by as much as eight before the end of the set. The Blue and Gold found life before the end of the set, thanks to back-to-back kills by sophomore Emma Mans and senior Elle Shult along with attacking errors from the Tribe to make it 23-19. The comeback attempt fell short, as William & Mary grabbed the final two points of the set thanks to a kill and attack error.
 
Canisius got out to a 5-3 lead in the third set courtesy of a pair of attacking errors and kills from Shult, Baldwin and junior Alexa Albinson.

The Tribe later used a 4-0 run to grab the 9-8 lead before the Griffs utilized a run of their own, earning five straight points for a 13-9 advantage in the set.

Deadlocked at 16, William & Mary went of a 9-5 run to close out the set, coming out on top 25-21 and earning the three-set sweep.
 
Senior Ella Loussia led the Griffs with 12 kills while freshman Ella Bourque chipped in a match high 31 assists. As a team, Canisius had a .167 hitting percentage (37-19-108), their highest of the weekend.
 
Sarah Callander and Sabrina Malcolm each had 12 kills for the Tribe while Amy Schwem dished out 20 assists. William & Mary had a hitting percentage of .288 (44-14-104) to finish the invitational a perfect 3-0.
 
Match Notes

• This was the first ever match on the volleyball court between Canisius and William & Mary. 
• Shult made her season debut in the first set of the match.
• Loussia had a match high 14.5 points against the Tribe.
• Neither team recorded a solo block in the contest, but the Griffs were able to register eight block assists. 

Up Next
Canisius returns home to co-host the 2022 WNY Invitational with crosstown rival Buffalo. The Griffs will face the Bulls along with Youngstown State and Bucknell.
