Volleyball Slips Against Buffalo in Day One of the 2022 Western New York Invitational

Even with late rallies in the final three sets, the Canisius volleyball team lost to Buffalo in the first match of the 2022 Western New York Invitational, 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-17, and 25-18).

The Golden Griffins fell to 2-5 on the season while the Bulls improved to 5-2.

The Griffs came out of the gate hot in the first set, amassing a 8-3 lead thanks to a pair of kills from sophomore Taylor Baldwin and a service ace from graduate student Stella Johnson before forcing a Buffalo timeout. Even after the timeout, the Griffs continued to grow their lead, going up by as many as nine. Even with a late Bulls rally, the Blue & Gold locked up the first set victory, 25-19.

After exchanging the opening two points of the second set, Buffalo took control, riding a 12-5 run to jump ahead, 14-6. The Griffs would ride a run of their own at the end of the set, led by back-to-back service aces from Baldwin and kills from senior Ella Loussia, but the Bulls held on to win, 25-19, and tie the match at 1-1.

The third set began much like the second set did, with both sides exchanging the opening points. It remained close until Buffalo used a 10-1 run to leap ahead, 16-7. Down 21-15, Canisius mounted a late run, led again by back-to-back service aces from Baldwin and kills from Loussia, but the Bulls capitalized on an attacking error and a kill from Emma Gielas to win the third set, 25-17, and take a 2-1 match lead.

The Bulls again jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set, establishing a early 5-2 lead. Canisius remained within striking distance, only down 15-11 at the media timeout. The Griffs and Bulls would exchange points after the break, but a quick 3-1 spurt saw the Griffs go down five, 19-14, before a 6-4 stretch from the Bulls gave them the 25-18 win and a 3-1 match victory.

Loussia led the Blue and Gold with 15 kills while freshman Ella Bourque chipped in a match-high 39 assists. As a team, the Griffs had a hitting percentage of .189 (43-22-111).

The Bulls were led by Katrin Trebichvska, who finished with a match-high 16 kills while Emma Puzausky totaled 35 assists. As a team, Buffalo hit at a clip of .285 (51-16-123).
