Cross Country Sweeps Little Three Championships

Paced by individual champions Tom Appenheimer and Marissa Silba, the Canisius men's and women's cross country teams swept the Little Three Championships Saturday at the McGraw-Jennings Field complex on the campus of St. Bonaventure University.
 
In the annual race that pits the Golden Griffins against regional rivals Niagara and St. Bonaventure, Appenheimer crossed the finish line first with a time of 15:06.4, nearly ten seconds ahead of Clay Peets from St. Bonaventure (15:16.3).
 
Senior and defending Little Three men's champion graduate student Michael Peppy placed third (15:37.5) and freshman Brody Jones took fourth (15:46.3). Senior Andrew Perreault (16:11.4), junior Kevin Board (16:11.9), sophomore Jacob Raichel (16:13.0) and senior Richard Moore (16:14.4) took places sixth through ninth, respectively, giving Canisius seven runners in the top nine of the race.
 
The Canisius men claimed its 16th straight Little Three men's crown as it posted a team score of 21 points, 19 points clear of St. Bonaventure (40) and more than 60 in front of Niagara (81).
 
On the women's side, Silba won the women's 5K with a time of 18:55.6, two seconds ahead of second place Jenna Gregory from St. Bonaventure.
 
Paced by Silba, the Griffs had five of the top seven runners as junior Olivia Moran (19:08.9), junior Jules Jones (19:17.1), sophomore Chloe Breen (19:22.4) and freshman Jacqueline Appenheimer (19:24.8) finished fourth through seventh, respectively.
 
As a team, Canisius finished with a total of 23 points, 15 in front of St. Bonaventure and more than 40 points ahead of Niagara as it captured its 18th Little Three women's team title in the last 20 championships.

Canisius returns to action on Sept. 16 when it travels to South Bend, Ind., to take part in the National Catholic Championships.
