Volleyball Falls Twice in Day One of Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational

The Canisius Volleyball team lost both of its matches during day one of the Robert Morris/Duquesne Invitational on Friday, falling to Duquesne and Robert Morris in a pair of 3-1 setbacks.
 
Against Duquesne, the Golden Griffins (2-3) took a 1-0 lead with a late comeback in the first set but the Dukes rallied to sweep the next three sets to clinch the victory (26-28, 25-17, 25-25, 26-24).
 
In the nightcap against Robert Morris, Canisius once again claimed the opening frame only to see the Colonials control the next three sets to earn the win (23-25, 25-12, 25-23, 25-16).

MATCH ONE RECAP
In the first set against the Dukes, Canisius fell behind early and trailed 23-17 late in the frame before a kill from senior Ella Loussia ignited a 6-0 run that tied the match at 23-all. The teams proceed to exchange points before a pair of kills from sophomore Kara Zaucha and a service ace from senior Bree Long clinched a 28-26 victory for the Griffs. 
 
The second set saw Canisius hold a 10-7 lead early in the frame before Duquesne took advantage of a pair of lengthy runs late in the set come out on top 25-17 and tie the match at 1-1.
 
The third set came down to the wire with neither team being able to hold onto a sizable lead. Down 24-23, sophomore Taylor Baldwin tied the match at 24-all with a kill before Duquesne's Carsyn Henschen and Morgan Kelly notched consecutive kills to win the third set, 26-24, and give the Dukes a 2-1 lead. 
 
Similar to the third set, the fourth frame came down to the wire as neither team could maintain a lead larger than four. Tied at 24-all in the later stages of the set, Henschen would nab a kill and a service ace from Camille Spencer gave the Dukes another 26-24 victory and 3-1 triumph
 
Baldwin led Canisius with 16 kills while freshman Ella Bourque totaled 40 assists. As a team, the Griffs posted a .110 hitting percentage (46-28-163).
 
Henschen was the kills leader for Duquesne with 21 kills while her teammate Hailey Poling had 30 assists. The Dukes hit at a slightly higher clip with a .152 hitting percentage (53-29-158).
 
MATCH TWO RECAP
Canisius got started on the right foot against Robert Morris, opening up an early 9-4 lead before the Colonials tied the match at 13-all with a nine-point rally. After going back and forth, the Blue & Gold stormed ahead in part due to three kills from Baldwin for the 25-23  victory.
 
Robert Morris took control early in the second set, racing out to a 20-9 lead. Sophomore Emma Mans and freshman Rylee McKinney sparked a brief run late in the set with three kills, but the Colonials took the set, 25-12, level the match at 1-1.
 
The Colonials again took control early of the third set, but the Griffs were able to tie the match 7-7 thanks to multiple kills from Baldwin and a service ace from Long. The rest of the set was close until the end, with Robert Morris using a 5-0 stretch to win the set, 25-23, take a 2-1 lead.
 
The fourth set saw the Colonials jump out to an early lead and never look back, going ahead by as many as nine. Even with a late run spearheaded by three straight kills from Loussia, the Colonials won the set 25-16 and the match 3-1.
 
Loussia led the Griffs in kills with 13 while Bourque totaled 30 assists. As a team, Canisius hit at a season low .042 clip (35-29-142).
 
Annie Monaco paced Robert Morris with a match-high 14 kills while her teammate, Ashleigh Wallin, dished out a match-best 31 assists31. As a team, the Colonials amassed a hitting percentage of .229 (55-22-144)
 
DAY ONE MATCH NOTES

• The Griffs' 28 points in the first set against Duquesne were their most in a single set since they defeated Iona, 28-26, in the fourth set of their match on Sept. 28, 2019
• With her 70 assists across both matches, Bourque moved into the top-50 for total assists across the NCAA 
• Long totaled 29 digs over both matches to move her NCAA career total to 1,441, just 59 away from 1,500
• Canisius has not lost an opening set in their last four matches. Their average margin of victory in the opening set is around four points
• Friday's match served as the ninth all-time meeting against Duquesne and the 19th all time contest against Robert Morris

Canisius returns to the court tomorrow at noon to take on William & Mary in its final match of the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational.
