Men’s Lacrosse Lands Five on All-MAAC Teams

Led by senior defenseman Ryan Sharkey, a total of five members of the Canisius men's lacrosse team were recognized as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its regular-season awards on Wednesday.

Sharkey garnered All-MAAC designation for the second straight season as he was named All-MAAC First Team. Fellow senior Jacob Buck and redshirt freshman Colin Kelly both garnered All-MAAC Second Team accolades on attack while sophomore Hunter Parucki was a second-team pick at the midfield position. Freshman faceoff specialist Johnny Richiusa was the fifth Golden Griffin to be honored, joining Kelly on the MAAC All-Rookie Team.

A native of Yonkers, Sharkey started all 14 games on defense for Canisius during the 2022 season, compiling 28 ground balls and recording seven caused turnovers. He finished with five or more ground balls on three occasions and posted a season-high three caused turnovers in a matchup with Monmouth on April 16. A 2021 All-MAAC Second Team selection, Sharkey also contributed on the offensive end of the field, picking up his first career point with an assist in the Griffs contest versus Cleveland State on March 6.

Like Sharkey, Buck also garnered All-MAAC accolades for the second consecutive season after pacing Canisius in assists (12) while ranking second in both goals (23) and points (35) during the 2022 campaign. The Rochester, N.Y., product recorded three hat tricks and tallied four or more points in five contests, highlighted by a four-goal, two-assist effort in the regular-season finale at St. Bonaventure on April 30. The 2021 All-MAAC First Team selection finished his career 14th on the program's all-time scoring list, racking up 127 points in 45 career games played.

Kelly earned both All-MAAC Second Team and MAAC All-Rookie Team honors following a freshman campaign that saw him lead Canisius in both goals (29) and points (37). The Syracuse, N.Y., native tallied multiple points in all but two of the 11 games he played this season, finishing with four or more points on five occasions. The five-time MAAC Rookie of the Week selection paced the league during the regular season in both goals (2.64) and shots (9.91) per game while ranking fourth on the circuit in points (3.36) per contest.

Parucki garnered All-MAAC recognition for the first time in his career after appearing in all 14 games during the regular season, posting 13 goals and nine assists for 22 points. The Lancaster, N.Y., product ranked fourth on the squad in both goals and points while sitting third in assists. Parucki turned in seven multiple-point performances during the regular season, including a four-assist effort against Quinnipiac, recording the most assists in a game by a Canisius midfielder since the 2018 season.

Richiusa received All-Rookie Team recognition after a debut season that saw him lead Canisius and rank among the top players in the league in face-off wins (149/2nd), face-off winning percentage (.521/3rd) and ground balls per game (7.43/2nd). The Four-time MAAC Face-off Player of the Week recorded double-digit faceoff wins on seven occasions and scooped up six or more ground balls in 10 contests. He posted season highs of 19 face-off wins and 14 ground balls in contests against league foes Manhattan (April 2) and St. Bonaventure (April 30).
