Softball Set to Play at Florida in Gainesville Regional

The Canisius softball team will open the 2022 NCAA Division I Softball Championship on Friday, May 20 at 4:30 p.m., when the Golden Griffins take on the No. 14 seed Florida Gators in the second game of the Gainesville Regional, the NCAA announced Sunday evening. That contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

The Griffs (32-16) earned the program's 13th trip to the NCAA Division I Softball Championship on Saturday by defeating Siena 4-0 in the title game of the MAAC Softball Championship. Canisius enters the NCAA Tournament riding a season-long 12-game winning streak, the longest win streak for the program since 1999.

This will be the Griffs' first trip to the NCAA Division I Softball Championship since 2009, when the Blue and Gold took part in the Columbus Regional, which was hosted by Ohio State. Canisius is one of two MAAC schools to claim a win in the NCAA Division I Softball Championship, with the last victory coming in the 2008 Hempstead Regional where the Blue and Gold defeated LIU Brooklyn in an elimination game by the score of 3-2.

Florida (43-16) is making its 22nd NCAA Regional appearance, and is coming off a 4-1 loss to Arkansas in the SEC Softball Tournament semifinal round. The Gators boast three All-SEC selections, led by redshirt-junior Skylar Wallace, who claims a.378 batting average to go with 59 hits, 10 doubles, five triples, six home runs and 43 RBI.

The other two schools in the Gainesville Regional will be Georgia Tech (37-16) and Wisconsin (28-19). Those two programs will meet in the regional's first game on Friday at 2 p.m. Canisius is 0-2 all-time against Florida, with the last meeting coming March 12, 2006 at the Stetson Invitational in DeLand, Fla. The Griffs are 2-3 all-time against Georgia Tech, and the Blue and Gold have played Wisconsin once previously, squaring off in a neutral site contest that took place in Tampa, Fla., in 2001.
