Steffan, Henneman Lead Baseball to Victory Over Rider

Graduate student Mike Steffan and senior Trevor Henneman registered two-run base knocks, leading Canisius to a 4-2 victory over Rider at Sonny Pittaro Field in Lawrenceville, N.J., on Saturday morning.

Steffan paced the Golden Griffin offense with a 3-for-4 effort, while Henneman went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run.

Brendan O'Donnell went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for Rider. John Volpe, Jack Winsett, Brian Skettini and Jordan Erbe all had two-hit performances for the Broncs (23-22, 10-8).

Junior Tom Peltier made his third straight start for Canisius (23-21, 13-7), earning his second victory. The southpaw yielded 10 hits and two runs over his six-inning outing. He walked two and struck out three.

Freshman Peyton Consigli inherited a bases-loaded jam with one out in the ninth. He came out unscathed, striking out both batters he faced to secure his fifth save of the year.

Frank Doelling was the losing pitcher for Rider after giving up four hits and two runs in the first 2.2 innings of action.

GAME RECAP
Canisius threatened to score after Rider retired two of its first three batters. Back-to-back singles by Steffan and graduate student Vinny Chiarenza loaded the bases, but a groundout induced by the Broncs led to the scoreless frame.

Following a double by senior Dylan Vincent to leadoff the second, Henneman hit his third home run — a two-run shot to left field — putting the Griffs ahead 2-0.

In the fourth, junior Brennan Chisholm ignited a two-out rally for Canisius with a double down the left field line. After a walk by sophomore Max Grant, Steffan doubled home both players to increase the lead to 4-0.

O'Donnell cut Canisius' lead in half, 4-2, in the sixth behind a two-run home run.

Rider threatened to force extra innings in their portion of the ninth after the leadoff hitter popped out in foul territory. A walk followed by a single and a hit batsman loaded the bases with one out. Consigli came in out of the bullpen with hopes of limiting Rider's offense.

The freshman struck out the next two batters despite throwing a wild pitch on the last strikeout. Henneman, however, was able to retrieve the ball and place a tag on the runner attempting to score from third base to get the final out of the game.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today was another classic Canisius versus Rider game. We executed some good at-bats early on and were able to execute on the mound and defensively to secure the win.

"Trevor had a strong day at the plate and came up big for us early. Mike Steffan did a great job extending our lead and continuing his success.

"Peyton was the best guy for us in that spot and he shined. He bounced back strong today and locked in the win for us.

"Pelt [Tom Peltier] gave us a great start today, getting Rider to put the ball in the ground. Our infield did a great job handling the baseball."

GAME NOTES
• Saturday was the 75th all-time meeting between Canisius and Rider. The Griffs improved to 36-39 over the Broncs. Eight of the last nine meetings, including the last six, have been decided within three runs.
• Steffan extended his on-base streak to 30 games, matching junior Mike DeStefano's longest streak of the season. Steffan also recorded his third consecutive three-hit game, the first time in his career he has accomplished the feat.
• Henneman's second-inning home run was Canisius' 40th home run of the year, marking the fifth time in program history the Griffs have hit 40 round-trippers in a year. It is the highest home run total since 2010 (77).
• Canisius turned four double plays on Saturday, the first time the Griffs had four twin-killings in a game since March 15, 2009, at Morehead State.
• Consigli earned his fifth save Saturday, placing him in the top-10 for a single season. The freshman is tied with Derek Zgoda (1994) and Brandon Bielecki (2014) for the 10th-most saves by a Canisius pitcher in a season. His five saves are the most by a freshman pitcher on record and are the most by a Griff since Will Frank (8) in 2019.
