Rider Blanks Baseball to Claim Series Victory

Vincent Vitacco and Danny Kirwin combined to throw a six-hit shutout, aiding Rider to a 4-0 victory over Canisius on Sunday afternoon at Sonny Pittaro Field in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Vitacco allowed five hits while walking one and striking out five in his six-inning start. Kirwin earned the three-inning save for the Broncs, allowing one hit and fanning four.

Brian Skettini and Luke Lesch recorded two hits apiece to pace Rider's offense. Lesch and Jack Winsett registered the lone RBI for the Broncs (24-22, 11-8).

Six Canisius batters recorded a hit in the loss. Senior Mike Steffan and sophomore Carlin Dick both hit doubles in the setback.

Junior Chris Pouliot made his first appearance since April 15, pitching two innings, allowing a hit, walking two and striking out a pair.

Sophomore Levi Abbott was the losing pitcher for the Golden Griffins, allowing five hits and three runs in his three-inning outing. He walked four and struck out three.

Senior Alec Ritzenthaler and freshman Peyton Consigli also pitched for Canisius (23-22, 12-8).

GAME RECAP
Canisius and Rider logged nine hits over the first three innings and stranded 13 runners on base without scoring a run.

Five of Canisius' six hits came in the first three innings before the Broncs pitching staff retired 17 of the final 21 batters that came up to the plate. A Dick's ninth-inning double was Canisius' only hit after the third inning, as the other runners reached base on a hit by pitch, fielder's choice and a walk.

Following a 1-2-3 inning by Rider in the fourth, the Broncs plated three runs in their half of the frame to take a 3-0 lead over the Griffs.

Rider drew a pair of walks to open the fourth, setting up a sacrifice bunt that put both Broncs runners in scoring position. Winsett recorded an RBI groundout that gave the Broncs the lead. After issuing a two-out walk, Abbott did not catch the return throw to the mound, enabling Jordan Erbe to score from third. Lesch extended the Rider lead later in the inning on an RBI single.

With runners at second and third, a balk by Consigli increased the Broncs' lead to 4-0 in the seventh.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today we struggled to generate offense. We hit some balls hard at guys and gave away some at-bats early on counts, which led to easy outs. We allowed the ups and downs of the game to take us out, which is very uncharacteristic of our group.

"We need to bounce back going into our last three games and give ourselves a shot at a playoff run."

GAME NOTES
• Saturday was the 76th all-time meeting between Canisius and Rider. The Griffs are now 36-40 over the Broncs.
• Canisius struck out seven Rider batters on Sunday, increasing its season total to 416. The 416 punchouts now stand as the fourth-most by a pitching staff in a season.
• With his first-inning double, Steffan extended his on-base streak to 31 games, marking the program's longest since Liam Wilson's 57-game streak that spanned the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
• Sophomore Max Grant recorded his 78th hit of the season with his single in the third inning. The 78 hits are tied for the 10th-most by a Griff in a single season, matching Sean Jamieson (2010) and Liam Wilson (2018).
• After his two-inning outing, Consigli improved his ERA to 2.21. Amongst pitchers with at least 30 innings pitched in a season, his ERA ranks as the seventh-lowest in a season.
• Consigli struck out two batters in his outing, bringing his season strikeout total to 47 in 34.2 innings pitched. His 12.20 strikeout-per-9-inning ratio is the best in program history (minimum 30 innings pitched).
