Varsity Eight Places Fourth at New York State Collegiate Championships

Canisius' top varsity eight earned a fourth-place finish in the Varsity Eight Final at the New York State Collegiate Championships on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on Saturday morning.

The varsity eight shell, which featured coxswain Ava Horgan, Isabella Bruno at stroke, Teagan Johnston, Destiny Severn, Olivia Merolle, Lucy Winkelmann, Hannah Kenefick, Brynn Krolikowski and Emma Maturo at bow, finished its heat in third place with a 7:12.695 time. Only Marist (6:57.007) and Colgate (7:04.824) ran faster times.

In the Varsity Eight Final, Canisius ran a spring-best 7:04.711, finishing 7.984 seconds ahead of its heat time. Marist earned the first-place finish, concluding the course in 6:52.080. Ithaca (6:54.356) and Colgate (6:58.995) were the other boats ahead of the Griffs.

The second varsity eight earned a first-place finish in the Petite Final, besting Ithaca by 16.697 seconds with a time of 7:44.005. The time in the Petite Final bested its heat time by 3.742 seconds (7:47.747).
 
Canisius' varsity four finished third in its heat with a 9:14.161 time. Marist (8:27.011) and Vassar (8:42.024) were faster than Canisius in the heat.
 
In the Petite Final for the varsity four, Canisius finished 4.432 seconds better than its heat time (9:09.729), finishing in fifth place. The United States Merchant Marine Academy placed first with its 8:38.003 time. D'Youville, Stony Brook and Binghamton also finished ahead of Canisius.

"We made another good step in the right direction today as a program. Our team is continuing to grow and learn how to race each week. We learned a lot about ourselves and our capabilities today, and look forward to carrying that over into this week's training."

Canisius will host its lone event of the spring season next Sunday, May 1, on the Black Rock Canal at the West Side Rowing Club. The event is currently scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
