Game Recap: Baseball |

Offense Explodes in Nightcap, Baseball Splits with Quinnipiac

Following a 5-2 loss in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader, Canisius used a 22-hit barrage to propel the Golden Griffins to a 15-9 victory over Quinnipiac at Quinnipiac Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn.

After Canisius jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one, the Bobcats scored the final five runs of the contest to win their conference opener.

Canisius' offense quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead during the nightcap before plating eight unanswered runs over the fifth and sixth innings to take a 13-3 advantage. The Bobcats, however, didn't go down without a fight as they scored four runs in the ninth inning to make it 15-9.

GAME ONE RECAP
A solo home run by sophomore Max Grant in the third and a steal of home by junior Mike DeStefano put Canisius ahead 2-0 after the top half of the fifth.

Grant belted a 2-0 pitch with two outs over the right field fence to put the Griffs ahead. DeStefano added the team's second run after Quinnipiac's catcher, Danny Melnick, saw Vinny Chiarenza trying to advance to second on a ball that bounced in front of home plate. Melnick threw to second base and DeStefano sprinted towards home plate. The shortstop did not cleanly catch the throw, allowing Chiarenza to return to first base.

Quinnipiac took the lead for good in the home half of the fifth behind a four-run inning. A bases-loaded balk by Canisius starter Matt Duffy brought in the first run of the frame. Kyle Maves struck out, but a wild pitch allowed him to reach second base and for a run to score. The next batter, Jared Zimbardo, hit an infield RBI single before Maves scored on a throwing error attempting to get him leaning off of third base following a pitch.

Keegan O'Connor added an insurance marker in the sixth for the Bobcats on a sacrifice fly.

Brandyn Garcia earned the victory for Quinnipiac, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned) over six innings while walking five and striking out nine. Anthony Ambrosino was credited with a three-inning save for the Bobcats. He yielded just one hit and walked three while fanning four.

Duffy struck out a career-high 12 batters in his six-inning outing. He surrendered five runs (one earned) on six hits and issued just one free pass.

Freshman Peyton Consigli struck out three in two relief innings.

GAME TWO RECAP
DeStefano opened the nightcap with a leadoff home run. After a walk and fielder's choice, Mike Steffan turned in a 15-pitch at-bat, resulting in a base hit to right field. Steffan fouled off nine consecutive pitches during his plate appearance. Krzeminski followed up Steffan's at-bat with an RBI single, plating Jake Zurat to put the Griffs ahead 2-0.

Krzeminski drove in his second of three runs for the game in the third on a fielder's choice. In the fourth, the Griffs added two more runs behind an RBI infield single by Grant and a Bobcat wild pitch that enabled Carlin Dick to score.

Quinnipiac used a three-run fifth to trim the deficit to 5-3 in the fourth. An errant throw by Chris Pouliot on a bunt single enabled a pair of runs to score. A Gianni Arici bunt single brought home the other Bobcat run of the frame.

Canisius scored eight unanswered runs — five of which came in the fifth — over the next two innings, taking a 13-3 lead. Mike Mazzara drew a bases-loaded walk, setting up a two-run, opposite-field double by Dick, who later scored on a passed ball. DeStefano brought in his second run of the game on an RBI groundout.

Krzeminski led the sixth off with a home run before DeStefano hit a two-run double to right field, giving the Griffs a 10-run lead.

Zak Thomas hit an RBI single, trimming the Quinnipiac deficit to 13-4 in the home half of the sixth.

In his first plate appearance after coming in as a defensive replacement, Sam LaChance hit a leadoff home run in the eighth to make it a 13-5 contest.

Two Canisius runs were scored on a fielding error by LaChance in the ninth, increasing the team's lead back to 10.

Quinnipiac's comeback attempt fell short as the Bobcats could only score four runs in the inning, allowing Canisius to salvage the split of the twin bill, 15-9.

Pouliot improved to 5-1 on the year, earning a win in his fourth consecutive appearance. He matched his career high for strikeouts (8) in just five innings.

Kevin Seitter dropped to 0-5 on the year after surrendering five runs on eight hits in his four-inning start.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Tale of two different offenses. We failed to show up consistently in game one on offense and then woke up in game two. We got the bounce-back game we needed after handing away game one.

"Our pitchers did a great job commanding the strike zone and controlling all pitches to have a dominant day. When they were on, they were really tough to get to. We failed defensively to hand them runs in the one game.

We are pleased with how our offense responded, but now we need consistency and our guys know that. We cannot get complacent and think games will be given to us. Every victory is earned no matter what and, especially in conference play and if we play to our ability level, we can earn a lot more."
