Baseball Claims Series Victory over Quinnipiac on Sunday

Graduate student Mike Steffan and sophomore Max Grant were two of four Canisius hitters to record two-hit performances as the Golden Griffins defeated Quinnipiac, 5-4, on Sunday at Quinnipiac Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn., to earn the series victory.

Steffan went 2-for-5 with a double and home run, while Grant's hits went for doubles. Junior Mike DeStefano and senior Dylan Vincent were the other Canisius players with multiple hits.

Junior Tom Peltier made his first start since May 9, 2021, allowing one hit and issuing three walks in 3.1 innings. He struck out a career-high six batters before being pulled.

Senior David Yankowski was credited with the win after pitching three innings of relief. He allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits while issuing two walks and striking out a pair.

Freshman Peyton Consigli earned his second save of the season after striking out three in two innings of work for Canisius (10-13, 3-3).

Tate Copeland was the losing pitcher for Quinnipiac (6-16, 1-2). He surrendered four hits and four runs in just 2.2 innings. Gabriel Romano pitched the remaining 6.1 innings for the Bobcats, allowing a run on five hits and striking out five.

GAME RECAP
Steffan and fellow graduate student Vinny Chiarenza hit two-run home runs in the first two innings, giving Canisius an early 4-0 lead.

Canisius' first three hits of the contest went for extra bases as Grant recorded the team's first hit – a double down the right field line – before scoring on Steffan's 2-run blast.

After allowing a base hit to the leadoff hitter, Peltier retired the next eight consecutive batters and 12 of the 15 he would face.

Steffan drove in his third run of the game on a two-out RBI double in the fourth, giving Canisius a 5-0 advantage.

Quinnipiac trimmed its deficit to 5-3 in the fifth behind a trio of one-out runs. Kyle Maves brought in the first run of the frame on an RBI single. During Keegan O'Connell's at-bat, a throwing error on a double-steal attempt led to another run to score. O'Connell then drove in the Bobcats' third run on a bunt single.

An eighth-inning Quinnipiac rally was hindered by Consigli, who entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out. Kyle Kush turned a double play by himself as he tagged the Quinnipiac runner on second, who was hesitant to advance to third. Kush then stepped on second for the force out. Consigli issued a walk before ending the inning with a strikeout.

Consigli prevented Quinnipiac from tying the game up in the ninth as he was able to set down the first two batters with a strikeout and groundout. Following a single, Consigli was able to get a three-pitch strikeout to give Canisius the series victory.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Proud of the guys for getting the 'W' today. We needed guys to step up and Pelt [Tom Peltier] did a great job to start. We bridged the gap with Peyton Consigli, who again showed great composure and execution for a freshman. We needed guys to step up and make big plays late in the game and Kyle Kush stepped up big time at shortstop."

"Offensively, it was great to get Mike Steffan heated up again. He and Vinny Chiarenza found big barrels early, which helped set the tone for our group at 9:25 a.m."

"It will be great to get back to the Demske Sports Complex. We have been on the road long enough and it's time to continue to form our identity on our turf!"
