Baseball Drops Series Opener to No. 20 Liberty

Shortstop Jake Lazzaro recorded the lone multi-hit performance for No. 20 Liberty, aiding the Flames to a 4-1 victory over Canisius in non-conference baseball action from Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium in Lynchburg, Va., on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Max Grant and senior Dylan Vincent had three hits apiece for Canisius (4-6), combining to record six of the team's seven base hits in the contest.

Matt Duffy was the losing pitcher despite striking out a season-high eight batters over his six innings on the mound. The sophomore allowed five hits and four runs (three earned) while walking three.

Joe Adametz III earned the victory for No. 20 Liberty (8-1), allowing an unearned run on five hits in six innings. Cade Hungate closed out the contest earning his third save of the campaign.

GAME RECAP
Canisius struck first in the scoring column as the first three batters reached base safely. Carlin Dick led the contest off by reaching on catcher's interference. Grant hit the first of his three singles of the day before a Liberty fielding error allowed Vinny Chiarenza to get on base safely. Dick crossed home plate on a double play turned by the Flames, putting the Griffs in front.

Liberty tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Brady Gulakowski.

Duffy asserted his dominance by closing out the first with a strikeout. The sophomore then retired the next seven batters he would face, with five outs coming via punchout.

The Flames took a 2-1 lead in the fourth as Derek Orndorff led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Foster. A fielder's choice and a passed ball set up the run-scoring opportunity for Foster.

Lazzaro scored on a fielder's choice in the fifth to make it a 3-1 contest before adding an insurance marker in the sixth with an RBI single to close out the scoring.

Brett Kochanski shut down Liberty in his two innings of relief, striking out four batters and not allowing a hit.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today we had opportunities, but the timing for a big hit just did not come when we needed it."

"Matt Duffy gave us another strong outing and we had a few miscues that allowed them to add a run here and there. Overall, they had a little luck offensively and we did not today.

"Dylan and Max both stepped in ready to hit. When they got the pitches they were looking for, they did not miss."
