Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Falls to No. 20 Liberty

No. 20 Liberty scored at least three runs in four innings, aiding the Flames to a 13-4 victory over Canisius at Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Aaron Anderson went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI. Derek Orndorff and Brady Gulakowski eached drove in three runs for Liberty (9-1), who has now won its last nine after dropping its season opener to Florida.

Mike Steffan and Dylan Vincent each had a pair of hits and an RBI in the defeat for Canisius (4-7).

GAME RECAP
A pair of one-out walks led to a three-run home run by Derek Orndorff, giving Liberty an early 3-0 lead. The blast was Orndorff's eighth of the campaign.

Canisius trimmed Liberty's lead to 3-2 in the third behind a pair of run-scoring hits with two outs. Mike DeStefano led the inning off after getting hit by a pitch. An RBI double down the right field line by Steffan allowed DeStefano to score. Vincent then drove Steffan home with an RBI single to left field before Vincent was thrown out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double.

A leadoff walk and single set up a three-run home run by Aaron Anderson to put Liberty ahead 6-2 in the third.

Freshman Justin Guiliano was strong out of the bullpen for Canisius, retiring 11 of the 14 batters he faced. Guiliano struck out five in 3.2 innings of work, yielding just two hits against.

A groundout by Carlin Dick drove home Vincent, who led the sixth inning off with a ground-rule double before stealing third during Dick's at-bat.

Liberty ended the contest scoring four runs in the seventh and eighth innings to propel the nationally-ranked Flames to victory.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"In a game like today, we did a good job of overcoming a shaky start and holding the score within reach. We chipped away to get it to a three-run deficit in the 7th due to a great performance out of Justin Guiliano to keep us in it. He continues to mature and do better each time out for us, so that was a bright spot.

"Up until the seventh they had two swings that gave them six runs so we need to look back at ways to minimize and compete better in the later innings as a whole."

GAME NOTES
• Saturday was the fifth all-time meeting between Canisius and Liberty. The Flames improved to 3-2 all-time against the Griffs and have won the last three in the series.
• Vincent extended his career-long hit streak to seven games with his pair of hits.
• DeStefano extended his on-base streak to 11 games after leading the contest off with a single.
