Baseball Drops Series Finale to Manhattan

Manhattan scored five unanswered runs over a three-inning stretch to defeat Canisius, 6-1, in the finale of the team's three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series from Clover Stadium in Pomona, N.Y., on Sunday afternoon.

Harrison Tremble, Jack Lynch and Pete Durocher each had two-hit performances for the Jaspers.

Kyle Lesler was the winning pitcher for Manhattan. He yielded four hits and one run over his five-inning outing, while walking one and striking out six. John Farley earned his third save of the season, pitching the final three innings for the Jaspers (10-11, 2-1 MAAC).

Junior Mike DeStefano recorded two of Canisius' four hits in the contest. Senior Dylan Vincent and graduate student Mike Mazzara had the other base knocks for the Golden Griffins (9-12, 1-2 MAAC).

Senior David Yankowski was the losing pitcher for Canisius after allowing three runs over 2.1 innings of relief.

Freshman Peyton Consigli pitched the first three frames for the Griffs, allowing one run on four hits. He walked one and fanned three.

GAME RECAP
Following a leadoff single by DeStefano, Lesler settled into a groove by retiring the next seven Canisius batters.

Manhattan struck first on the scoreboard with an RBI fielder's choice by Dolan Ocasal in the second.

In response to the Jaspers taking the lead, consecutive doubles by Mazzara and DeStefano brought the Griffs level, 1-1, in the third.

A leadoff single by Vincent in the fourth was the last hit Manhattan allowed for the remainder of the contest.

The Jaspers took the lead for good in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Lynch.

Canisius had an opportunity to trim the deficit in the top-half of the sixth as graduate student Gibson Krzeminski was hit by a pitch and sophomore Max Grant followed with a walk. Manhattan then set down the next three Griffs batters in order, two of which were via strikeout.

RBI singles by Zahan Meyer and Tremble in the sixth extended the Jaspers lead to 5-1 before an opposite field solo home run by Durocher in the seventh distanced the Jaspers from the Griffs.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"We did not do enough to win today. Our approach at the plate was poor, which lead to bad results. I thought we competed on the mound, but our defense was a step behind.

"It stings to open up conference play with a series loss and our resilience will be tested this week as we regroup and work to get back to where we need to be to prepare for our trip to Quinnipiac."

GAME NOTES
• Sunday was the 82nd all-time meeting between Canisius and Manhattan. The Jaspers improved to 43-39 against the Griffs.
• DeStefano extended his on-base streak to 21 games with his leadoff single. The junior is now on a six-game hitting streak and has logged a hit in 10 of his last 11 appearances.
