Baseball Cruises to Victory Over Manhattan

Graduate student Vinny Chiarenza went 3-for-6 with a double, triple and four RBI, while Dylan Vincent was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, leading Canisius to 13-5 victory over Manhattan from Clover Stadium in Pomona, N.Y., on Saturday afternoon.

Chiarenza and Vincent were two of six Golden Griffin players to score twice in the victory. Junior Mike DeStefano was the only other Canisius player to log a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and a pair of walks drawn.

Junior Chris Pouliot earned the victory on the mound for Canisius (9-11, 1-1 MAAC), improving to 4-1 on the year. The southpaw allowed seven hits and five runs (four earned) over his six innings on the mound.

Senior Brett Kochanski earned his second save of the season as he pitched the final three innings for the Griffs.

Jordan Warecke was the losing pitcher for Manhattan (9-11, 1-1 MAAC) after surrendering six runs on eight hits over five innings.

GAME RECAP
Manhattan leaped out to a 2-0 lead in the home-half of the first as David Bermudez hit an RBI double before scoring on a groundout by Jack Lynch.

Canisius responded by plating six runs in the second. The Griffs opened the frame with three consecutive singles. Following back-to-back outs, DeStefano started the team's two-out rally by singling home a pair of runs to tie the game. A two-run double by Chiarenza and an RBI single by Vincent put the Griffs ahead for good, 6-2.

After allowing the first two runners to reach base to open the contest, Pouliot settled into a grove for Canisius, retiring 12 of the next 14 batters.

The Jaspers trimmed Canisius' lead to 6-5 with three unanswered runs over the fifth and sixth innings.

Trevor Santos scored on a fielder's choice in the fifth and Pete Durocher blasted a two-run home run to left field to cut the deficit to just one.

A four-run seventh distanced Canisius from Manhattan once again as the Griffs had just two hits in the inning, drawing five walks and forcing the Jaspers to utilize four pitchers.

Three insurance markers were added by the Griffs in the ninth behind a two-run triple by Chiarenza, who later scored as a result of three consecutive walks issued by Manhattan.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today was a better day. We talked a lot about staying committed to our approach going in and not letting one pitch or one result change things. Today was a much better collective effort up and down the lineup and we found success.

"Dylan and Vinny really did a great job today.  For Vinny, it is just a matter of time before things really start to click for him and Dylan, when he is locked in, is hard to beat.

"We put ourselves in a position to win the weekend and we need to come out with the same focus tomorrow as we had today."

GAME NOTES
• Saturday was the 81st all-time meeting between Canisius and Manhattan. The Golden Griffins are now 39-42 versus the Jaspers and have won five of the last six over its MAAC rival.
• The 13 runs scored are the most by Canisius in a road game against Manhattan, besting the previous high set on May 13, 2018, in a 10-6 victory.
• Canisius, as a team, drew 13 walks in the contest, the most since a 16-walk effort against Quinnipiac on May 9, 2021.
• The Griffs stole seven bases on Saturday, the program's most since March 28, 2013, when the team swiped seven bases at Iona.
• DeStefano extended his on-base streak to 20 games after drawing a walk to open the game.
• Despite being held hitless in the contest, sophomore Max Grant drew a pair of bases-loaded walks. It is Grant's eighth career multi-RBI game and the Griffs are 7-1 in those games.
• Vincent's four hits established a career high for the senior and tied for the most by a Canisius player this season. He is the third different player with a four-hit game this year and the first since Grant had four base knocks against Charleston Southern in the first game of a March 12 doubleheader.
• Kochanski became the first Canisius pitcher to pitch at least three innings of hitless relief since Jarod Burmaster against Saint Peter's on April 19, 2019.
