Manhattan Defeats Baseball on Walk-off Single in Pitcher’s Duel

A walk-off RBI single by Pete Durocher lifted Manhattan to a 2-1 victory over Canisius in a pitcher's duel at Clover Stadium in Ponoma, N.Y., to open the MAAC portion of the 2022 schedule on Friday afternoon.

It was a battle between each team's ace pitchers, Canisius sophomore Matt Duffy and Manhattan graduate student Will Hesslink, and both starters allowed one run during their outings. Neither pitcher factored in the decision for their respective team.

Duffy scattered four hits over seven innings, while issuing a walk and striking out four. Hesslink fanned eight in 6.1 innings, yielding five hits and giving up an unearned run.

John Farley was the winning pitcher for the Jaspers (9-7, 1-0 MAAC), improving his record to 2-0 on the year. He retired all seven batters he faced.

Junior Tom Peltier was on the wrong end of the decision for the Blue and Gold (8-11, 0-1 MAAC), as he allowed two hits and a run over his 1.1 innings on the mound.

Peltier's classmate, Kenny Dodson, was the lone player from either squad to log a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

GAME RECAP
Both teams were held hitless over the opening three frames as Duffy and Hesslink were both locked in on the mound. Duffy retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced, while Hesslink set down nine of the first 10 he squared off against.

Junior Mike DeStefano recorded the first hit of the contest with a leadoff single in the fourth. Hesslink, however, limited the damage in the inning striking out a pair of Griffs batters before ending the inning with a groundout.

Graduate student Jake Zurat reached base on a fielding error to open the fifth. Back-to-back singles by fellow graduate student Mike Mazzara and Dodson gave Canisius a 1-0 lead.

Manhattan recorded its first two hits of the contest in the fifth after Jack Lynch led the inning off with a base hit up the middle. Trevor Santos later logged the Jaspers' other hit in the frame with one out.

Back-to-back doubles by Manhattan's Frankie Marinelli and David Bermudez in the sixth tied the game, 1-1. Duffy was able to evade any more damage, as he was able to get an unconventional double play with the bases loaded to end the frame.

Durocher struck out and the ball got away from Mazzara, leading to Bermudez sprinting toward home plate in an attempt to score the go-ahead run. Mazzara underhanded the ball to Duffy, who was covering home, and he applied the tag on Bermudez to end the inning.

Following a pinch-hit walk drawn by graduate student Gibson Krzeminski to load the bases, Manhattan brought in Farley who was able to induce an inning-ending double play to prevent any runs from scoring.

Manhattan opened the home-half of the ninth with a single by Matt Padre, who later advanced to second on a wild pitch by Peltier. A groundout by Lynch advanced Padre to third, setting up Durocher's walk-off RBI-single to left field.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today was a tough when we did not compete at the plate and it cost us.

"Matt Duffy continued to be our guy on the mound. He was commanding the zone with his whole arsenal and he did a great job.

"For Kenny to step up and compete for us was great. It was a bright spot on a day where those were tough to find."
