Pouliot Powers Baseball to Shutout of North Carolina A&T

Junior Chris Pouliot allowed just one hit over seven shutout innings as Canisius closed its three-game series against North Carolina A&T with a 4-0 shutout at World War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro, N.C., on Sunday afternoon.

Pouliot issued three walks in his outing while striking out eight batters, matching his career high.

Junior Mike DeStefano and senior Dylan Vincent each drove in a pair of runs for the Golden Griffins (8-10). Vincent was the lone Canisius batter with a multi-hit performance.

Peyton Winebarger was the losing pitcher for the Aggies (9-10). He allowed five hits, four runs (three earned) over his five innings of work. He walked five and struck out seven.

Junior Tom Peltier logged his second save of the season for the Griffs.

GAME RECAP
Pouliot retired the next seven batters he faced after allowing a leadoff single to North Carolina A&T's Cameran Brantley. In all, Pouliot set aside 19 of the following 24 Aggie batters he faced during his stellar start.

All nine Canisius batters came to the plate in the third, as the Griffs jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Graduate student Mike Mazzara hit an opposite field triple, setting up a two-run home run by DeStefano. Vincent added to the lead with a two-out RBI single, plating sophomore Max Grant.

Vincent increased Canisius' lead to 4-0 in the fifth with his second RBI single of the contest, allowing Grant to score for a second time.

Senior David Yankowski escaped a jam in the eighth to keep the shutout intact. Following a walk and single, a wild pitch enabled both Aggie runners to advance 90 feet. After the wild pitch, Yankowski struck out the next two batters.

Peltier came into the game with two runners on and two outs, thwarting a potential Aggie comeback attempt by inducing a pop out to conclude the contest.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"CP [Chris Pouliot] threw great for us. We had a hunch he was due for a strong outing today with all of his lead up work this week and he delivered. He competed and battled all day and gave us just what we needed to get the win today.

"Mike DeStefano has been really good this year at trusting his approach and being committed to it. Nothing phases him and he does a great job in the box of working for pitches he can handle and not missing them when he gets them.

"We needed this win today. It shows resolve in our group and takes us into conference play on a positive note and building on things we still need to refine. The guys answered the bell today when they were challenged and we need to continue playing our game."

GAME NOTES
• Sunday was the third all-time meeting between Canisius and North Carolina A&T. It was Canisius' first victory over the Aggies, who now have a 2-1 lead in the series.
• It was Canisius' first shutout since a 21-0 victory over Saint Peter's last year on May 12. The victory was the Griffs' first 9-inning shutout since a 9-0 win over Niagara on March 27, 2019.
• Three Golden Griffins extended their on-base streaks on Sunday. DeStefano has now reached base safely in each of his 18 games this season. Grant and Vincent extended their streaks to 16 and 13 games, respectively.
• With his two-run home run, DeStefano now has the most multi-RBI games by a Canisius player this season (4).
