Women’s Basketball Cruises Past St. Bonaventure

Canisius used a 21-2 run to open the second quarter to pull away from St. Bonaventure as it cruised to an 85-47 victory in collegiate women's basketball action Wednesday at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo.

Junior Dani Haskell scored a game-high 16 points to pace a torrid Golden Griffins (3-5) attack that shot 54.7 percent (29-of-53) from the floor, highlighted by a 14-for-23 (.609) effort from 3-point range. Haskell was one of four Canisius players to reach double figures as freshmen Sisi Eleko and Chloe Chard Peloquin chipped in 15 and 10, respectively, while senior Jane McCauley finished with 11. Sophomore Lydia Gattozzi led a balanced effort on the glass, pulling down a team-best six rebounds as the Griffs held a 42-31 advantage on the glass.

Nadechka Laccen and I'yanna Lops scored 12 points each for the Bonnies (2-8), who shot just .286 percent (18-for-63) from the floor for the contest, including a frigid 3-of-23 (.130) performance from downtown.

In the annual meeting between the two Little Three rivals, Canisius never trailed in the contest as it scored six of the first seven points of the game on its way to building an early 13-6 advantage. The Griffs connected on six of their first 12 field-goal attempts while The Bonnies were limited to just 2-of-9 shooting to start the game.

Holding a 19-12 edge at the start of the second quarter, the Griffs continued their torrid shooting, hitting their first six attempts from 3-point range to power the game-changing run that lasted just over six minutes and increased Canisius' cushion to 40-14. Four different players scored during the pivotal stretch, led by six points each from Haskell and Stubbs and five points by McCauley.

SBU cut into the Griffs advantage before the halftime buzzer, tallying 11 of the last 14 points of the half to make a 43-25 contest at the break.

Canisius continued to pour it on in the third quarter, closing out the frame on a 20-8 stretch that lasted the final 6:38 of the frame and saw six different Griffs record a point as it expanded its lead to 72-39.

The fourth quarter saw the teams trade baskets during the first eight minutes of the frame before junior Giana Hernandez-Boulden and sophomore Rhay Porter scored the final six points of the game to close the Griffs' 38-point blowout victory.
