Women’s Basketball Drops Final Non-Conference Contest Saturday

Youngstown State used a 24-4 run during the second quarter to pull away in a 75-50 win over Canisius in collegiate women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center in Youngstown, Ohio.

Lilly Ritz scored a game-high 26 points to pair with seven boards for the Penguins (6-3) while Megan Callahan and Malia Magestro chipped in 15 and 10 points, respectively, for the host squad. Youngstown State finished the contest shooting 45 percent (27-60) from the floor while hitting six three-pointers in 23 attempts (26.1 percent).

Freshman Brooklyn Thrash paced the Golden Griffins' offense in its final non-conference matchup in the 2022-23 campaign (3-of-6), tallying 15 points to end the game one away from tying her season high. Thrash also compiled four assists, four steals and a pair of blocks in 29 minutes of action.

Sophomore Elia Paez finished the contest with 10 points after shooting 4-of-8, while the team shot just 32.7 percent (18-of-55) from the floor and 26.3 percent (5-for-19) from beyond the arc.

The Penguins jumped out a 5-2 lead less than two minutes into the game, but the Griffs were able to claw their way back to eventually take an 8-7 lead late in the first quarter. Paez tied the contest at  7-all with a deep 3-pointer before sophomore Lydia Gattozzi hit her second free throw to give Canisius the brief lead.

YSU scored seven unanswered points over the final 1:30 of the opening quarter to take a six-point lead into the second frame.

After a pair of quick buckets from Gattozzi and junior Giana Hernandez-Boulden to make it a two-point contest, the Penguins' offense came alive, scoring 24 of the final 28 points of the first half to take control of the game.

Ritz and Callahan combined for 16 points in the quarter with Callahan going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Thrash helped the Griffs get back into the game after the break, scoring eight points, but Canisius headed into the fourth quarter down 24 after Shay-Lee Kirby connected on a three-ball with 50 seconds left.

The fourth quarter saw the teams trade baskets during the final eight minutes of the contest. Paez collected her final seven points on a trio of field goals.
