Men’s Basketball Battles in Loss at Siena

The host Siena Saints used a 12-0 run over the span of 1:57 in the later stages of the ball game, with seven of those points coming from the free-throw line, to record a 74-70 win over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball action Friday night at MVP Arena in Albany, N.Y.

The win victory moved Siena to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in MAAC action with their third-straight loss.

A bucket by Canisius redshirt-freshman Tahj Staveskie with 5:38 remaining in the contest put the Griffs up five at 61-56, and it also started a chaotic stretch of the game which saw the Griffs get whistled for two technical fouls and a common foul in the span of eight seconds. Those three calls awarded the Saints six free-throws, which Siena turned into five points, to even the game at 61-61 with 5:27 left to play. After the teams traded turnovers, Canisius missed a shot at its end of the floor and then fouled Siena on its next possession. The two ensuing free-throw makes by Siena's Michael Baer put the home team up for good at 63-61, and Siena eventually stretched its cushion to 68-61 with 3:39 remaining after Jared Billups pounded home a two-handed jam.

But the Griffs didn't go away, using a quick 6-0 run over the next 1:31 to make the score 68-67 in favor of Siena with 1:44 remaining. In that scoring spurt, graduate student Jamir Moultrie, who made his first career start for the Griffs on the night, had four of the Blue and Gold's points. The final seven points of the game were scored at the free-throw line, as Canisius was never able to tie the contest or regain the lead down the stretch.

The Griffs, who trailed 31-27 at the break, were down as many as seven points early in the second half before outscoring Siena 19-9 over a stretch of 7:01. In the portion of the second half, Staveskie and sophomore Tre Dinkins fueled the Griffs' charge, as each player drained a pair of 3-point field goals. Canisius never led by more than five at any point in the second half, and the game's final 20 minutes saw four lead changes and three ties.

Graduate student Jordan Henderson led the way for Canisius with his team-high 18 points. He went 6-for-9 from the floor in the game, with four of those baskets coming from 3-point land. Moultrie added 17 points, while senior Jacco Fritz chipped in nine points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Griffs shot 41.5 percent from the field and 44.0 percent (11-for-25) from 3-point land in the loss, and the team ended the night by making 5-of-7 chances from the free-throw line. The Griffs also were credited with 18 assists on 27-made field goals, led by Staveskie, who dished out a game-high five.

For Siena, three players scored in double-figures, led by Javian McCollum, who had a game-high 27 points. Baer added 10 points off the bench, while Jackson Stormo posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Siena out-rebounded Canisius by a 35-32 clip for the game, and the home team ended the night by shooting 44.2 percent from the field, 52.9 percent (9-for-17) from 3-point land and 90.5 percent (19-for-21) from the free-throw line.
