Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Falls to Iona on the Road

Iona sophomore Walter Clayton Jr., scored a game-high 21 points and the host Gaels ended the day by shooting 55.9 percent from the field en route to a 90-60 win over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Hynes Center in New Rochelle, N.Y. The win moves Iona to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins fell to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in league play with their fourth-straight setback.

Canisius senior Jacco Fritz recorded his seventh career double-double in the losing effort with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Redshirt-freshman Tahj Staveskie scored 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including three 3-pointers, and graduate student Jamir Moultrie added 11 points. Canisius out-rebounded the Gaels 42-34, which included 20 offensive rebounds, but the Blue and Gold shot just 33.3 percent from the field and turned the ball over a season-high 20 times, which the Gaels turned into 31 points.

A 3-pointer from the left corner by sophomore Tre Dinkins got Canisius within three at 19-16 with 9:42 left in the first half, but that would be as close as the Griffs would get the rest of the way, as Iona ended the opening half by outscoring the Griffs 24-10 to take a 43-26 lead into the halftime break. Staveskie knocked down back-to-back three-balls in the opening moments of the second half to trim Iona's lead to 13 at 45-32, but the Gaels answered with another quick scoring run, using a 7-2 spurt over the game's next 1:11 to stretch their lead back to 18 points at 50-32 with 17:21 left in the contest.

Clayton Jr., scored his 21 points after he went 7-for-10 from the field, 3-for-4 from 3-point land ad 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in 22:08 of game action. He also had four assists and four steals in the win for Iona, which has now won 20-straight home games. Berrick JeanLouis scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Nelly Junior Joseph chipped in 12 points. The Gaels made 33-of-59 field goal attempts in the victory, which included eight makes from 3-point land. Iona also made 16-of-21 tries from the free-throw line as well.

HEAD COACH REGGIE WITHERSPOON POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Iona played really hard and they were able to sustain their intensity for the duration of the game and it really affected our ability to execute. We told our guys this in the locker room, after the first 10 minutes of the game, mentally, our guys wanted the intensity level of the game to go down. They wanted the challenge to slow down. And that's not the way they play."

"In a game like this, your team learns exactly how hard you have to play, and the intensity level you need to bring every time. Moving forward, what are we going to do when we are met with a certain level of resistance?"

"We don't have an easy non-conference schedule, that's for certain. If you're looking at this as outcome-oriented, then you'll struggle with this. As a team, we need to have a growth mindset. That means every time we step on the floor, we are determined to learn and keep working at getting better."

GAME NOTE
• Sunday's game was the 71st in series history. Iona leads the series 38-33.
Jacco Fritz leads all active Canisius players with his seven-career double-doubles.
• Dinkins came off the bench and scored nine points on Sunday. In the last two games, he's averaging 7.5 points per contest.
• Freshman Youri Fritz grabbed a season-best seven rebounds for the Blue and Gold.
