Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Rallies to Defeat Buffalo, 57-55

Down eight entering the final quarter of action, the Canisius women's basketball team stormed back to defeat crosstown rival Buffalo, 57-55, thanks to late-game heroics from junior Dani Haskell and sophomore Rhay Porter.

In the season opener for both programs, Canisius held a one-point lead with less than ten seconds left in the opener quarter when the Blue and Gold got a three-pointer from senior guard Jane McCauley to hold a 14-10 advantage at the break.

The second and third quarters would favor the Bulls, with Buffalo out-scoring the Griffs by a 34-22 margin across the middle two frames. Still, the Griffs held a slim 27-25 halftime lead before the Bulls tallied 19 points during the third quarter to grab a 44-39 lead entering the final ten minutes of action.

Down by five entering the fourth quarter, the Griffs got started early with a 3-pointer from graduate student Vannessa Garrelts to cut the deficit to two. Buffalo would answer back, but the Blue and Gold found an answer again, this time from freshman Brooklyn Thrash who hit a contested shot from beyond the arc to make it 46-42.

The teams continued to exchange baskets with Canisius cutting the deficit to just one, 53-52, on a jumper in the paint by Porter. Buffalo's Caelan Ellis missed a mid-range shot which led to a transition opportunity for Garrelts, who drained an off-balanced layup to give the Griffs their first lead since early in the third quarter, 54-53.

A defensive standstill would ensure with the Griffs keeping the Bulls at bay for the remainder of the contest. At the free-throw line with one second left, Haskell split a pair of free-throw attempts, but Porter came down with the offensive board on Haskell's miss to seal the two-point victory for the Griffs.
