Women's Basketball Suffers Setback Against Toledo

Behind a double-double from Quinesha Lockett, the Toledo Rockets defeated the Canisius women's basketball team 93-66 in non-conference women's basketball action Friday night at the John F. Savage Arena in Toledo, Ohio. Toledo improved to 2-0 on the year with the victory, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 1-1 on the young season with the loss.

Lockett, an All-Mid-American Conference First Team selection a season ago, ended the night with 27 points and 10 rebounds to go with six assists and two steals. She was one of four Toledo players to score in double-figures in the victory, with Sophia Wiard adding 20 points and six assists as well. The Rockets shot 45.3 percent from the field and ended the night with 10 makes from 3-point land.

For Canisius, graduate student Vannessa Garrelts led the Blue and Gold with 16 points, highlighted by a perfect 9-for-9 effort from the free-throw line. Junior Dani Haskell added 15 points and sophomore Lydia Gattozzi scored 10 points off the bench. Freshman forward Sisi Eleko grabbed eight rebounds for the Griffs, who shot 35.7 percent from the field, while hitting on 18-of-21 (85.7 percent) free-throw attempts.

The first quarter of play was dominated by the host Rockets, who took a 23-6 lead after the opening 10:00 of play thanks to seven points from Lockett. A 13-4 run by the Griffs midway through the second quarter got Canisius within seven points at 35-28 with 2:19 left before halftime. In that spurt, Eleko and fellow freshman Brooklyn Thrash hit back-to-back 3-pointers to get the Griffs within 10. Moments later, Garrelts completed a traditional 3-point play to make the score 35-28, however, that was as close as the Griffs would get on the night, as Toledo answered with a 9-2 run over the final 1:41 of the opening half to take a 43-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Nine of the 12 Griffs that saw action in the game scored at least two points in the losing effort. Junior Giana Hernandez-Boulden made her first career appearance and scored seven points on the night, while Eleko and senior Jane McCauley each had six points for Canisius.
